The common (incorrect) usage often promotes a usage that becomes acceptable. While "acceptable", it is still incorrect.

I.E: the word literally

 

It's in the dictionary; thus, its usage was proper.

 

So is literally when it should be figuratively .

The dictionary I'm using has a usage note that has the following example:

"The senator was literally buried alive in the Iowa primaries. "


It's in the dictionary. Does it make this acceptable? Some might say yes.

Is it correct? No.
