Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] If we know the universe is expanding, then how do we know? What is it expanding into?
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] We know it's expanding mainly because of something called "redshift" - we noticed that very distant galaxies/structures appear reddish through a telescope. This suggests that the visible light waves that are approaching us from these structures, are of a long wave length (red = longest visible light wavelength, violet = shortest wavelength). But this red light cannot be emitted entirely from the galaxies, since the nearby galaxies are not of this a colour. The theory is that as the light travels to us over billion of years, the wavelength gradually becomes longer over time. Scientists have theorised that this increasing wavelength is as a result of space "stretching" - this has been attributed to the expansion of the universe. For your latter question, it is believed (although not proved, I think) that the universe is not expanding in the sense that it's getting bigger, but because of this apparent "stretch" of space, that we perceive as an increase in size (from our perspective). I haven't done the research, so apologies if this is inaccurate.
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] It's not expanding into anything, it’s just expanding. "The definition of the Universe is that it contains everything. If something was outside the Universe, it would also be part of the Universe too. Outside of that? Still Universe. Out side of THAT? Also more Universe. It’s Universe all the way down. But I know you’re going to find that answer unsatisfying, so now I’m going to break your brain. Either the Universe is infinite, going on forever, or its finite, with a limited volume. In either case, the Universe has no edge...With no edge, it’s not expanding into anything, it’s just expanding.... ...Astronomers think that if you travel in any direction far enough, you’ll return to your starting position. If you could stare far enough into space, you would be looking at the back of your own head. http://www.universetoday.com/1455/podca ... ding-into/ The page has a link to a video that explains it in more detail and makes it a lot clearer.
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] If there was another universe before us doesn't that mean that there was probably another species there?
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] Not necessarily. We could have just been a happy coincidence. There may have been life before us, but it's not 100% certain.
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] I can pretty much guarantee that there's life elsewhere in the universe, and lots of it, at that. 100's of Billions of galaxies, each containing on average 100 billion stars. 1x10^11^2 = ~10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. That's a lot of potential solar systems
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] What if I went to the end of the universe, then kept going. What would happen?
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] You would die  If there were an end, it would be a true vacuum there mmh. I say you get pulled back due gravity :3
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] The theory is there is no edge. You'd just keep going and end up right back where you started.
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] The vacuum is irrelevant, i dont even know why i added it. But 'you die' is a correct answer most of the time
Re: The Universe is NOT Infinite [Proof] Im pretty sure what greatkingfrank was getting at is if u went to the end of the universe and then went a little bit further, would that then be the new edge of the universe, then again if u took another "step" forward would you then of moved the edge of the universe with you. Ive watched many docs and read even more theories on this, the fact remaind that humans as a species are no where near to understanding this since we are still struggling to understand even the most basic principals of the universe and the laws of nature that govern it so whatever theory we prove to be wrong another will always pop up
