Cult I'd love to know what you think was going on in WW1. Because I suspect you are tragically uninformed about those events
Do you not realize that countries other than America have different ways of doing things? Like 9/11 for us would be 11/9 for Europe. He said 11/11, the day of the Armistice of WW1. He wasn't even thinking about 9/11, but instead of Remembrance Day, where all the WW1 powers sell poppies and stuff to commemorate the war to end all wars.
Why support the red(blood stained) poppie? During WW1 it was a time that all countries in the war showed imperialism, the governments of these countries sent millions upon millions of young men to there deaths, which is considered as genocide. Genocide is the systematic destruction of all or a significant part of a racial, ethnic, religious or national group. Theses governments were the scum - of the earth, but people are blinded by it, they said it was for the glory of there country, but where is the glory in millions of young men getting massacred? Then they use the red poppie to hide this. I'm not disrespecting any of our veterans who died during these wars, but instead of getting a red poppie, get a white poppie which symbolises peace and dosnt insult those who died for for there shitty government. Haters gonna hate
A) Tell us something we don't know, you're right up until the mention of genocide even if you do cut out a huge chunk of information on the causes of the war. B) People very quickly forgot "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori", nobody thought it was glorious then nor do they think so now. And what on earth is this bs about red poppies hiding something? C) People didn't die for their government, they died for their country/family/friends. You can't blame the men and boys who went to war under the binds of conscription, guilt and coercion for anything, and you certainly can't pretend any one soldier died for their government; they most definitely didn't see it that way.
Shaun I'd argue your points about genocide. They can and do occur in wars but the events of ww1 on the western front wasn't a genocide. Nor were either sides governments determined to slaughter their own men. They were fighting the first modern total war and trying to win against opponents of great skill and equal power. The generals were learning a new type of warfare and sadly those lessons were costly in blood and life. It's very rarely a sweet and seemly thing to die for ones country no matter whatever Horace may exhort.
I'm astounded by the number of Americans who don't know we have a holiday on 11/11 that is based on Remembrance Day. It's called VETERANS DAY. "Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies. A Congressional Act approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday: "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'...In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Congress amended this act on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it has been known as Veterans Day since." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Day
Yeah, once you've learnt twelve languages go wall all the accounts on kaw for silence and then hope 1 person out of something like 2million isn't young or an imbecile and then sure, we can have 2 mins silence
We should have a moment of silence to remember where we lesft our keys and think of what to have for dinner
Americans. You post at least seven threads a year praising the military, and when it comes down to a date with meaning around the world, you just can't respect it. That's why we don't care for your contribution.
EXACTLY!!!! Rememberance Day is on 11th November the end of hostilities from World War I . Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" 1918. Armistice day . You have Veterans Day. along with countless others pay respect towards America on this day, so either shut up or **** off if you can't respect our day an remember all those who lost their lives in WW1 an all the wars after.
You yanks shot more British troops than the Germans did. Have you guys got the hang of friendly fire yet?
@ Them guys talking genocide. The Armenian Genocide occurred in WWI by the Ottomans. From vague memory (I wasn't alive back then ) it was the first genocide of the twentieth century. So yeah, claims of genocide are correct.
