Actually the IRA had Catholic ties and the UVF had Protestant ties, and yes people did deliberately kill innocent civilians. The IRA would target innocent Protestants and the UVF would target innocent Catholics. Please tell me how that isn't a religious factor to the groups?

The British army opened fire at a civil rights March in Derry northern Ireland (Bloody Sunday)killing 14 innocent people. The British prime minister apologised after an inquiry which found their previous cover up to be a lie and that they killed innocent civilians for no reason. Republican and Unionist groups killed lots of civilians but it wasn't about religion. The war was over whether Ireland unites or northern Ireland remains a part of the UK. Republicans were largely Catholic and Unionists were largely Protestants. Ireland was a Catholic country and in the 1600s the Protestant British set up plantations in the North of the Island removing the Catholics from their land. It has nothing to do with religion it's about remaining apart of the UK or uniting Ireland and the loyalists happen to be mostly Protestants and the Republicans happen to be mostly Catholic
