Morals: Why do we have them?

  1. If you lie you don't go to jail.

  2. I can explain better in PM, if you want, Rio.

  3. I think some people are confusing "morals" with "laws." Laws are the societal rules used to keep a group of people from descending into the lord of the flies. Morals are often a higher standard of rules that are often not enforceable.

For example: unjustified killing is often considered amoral. It is often also against the law. This is good for a society because otherwise there would be no incentive for people not to kill each other, even of only because of a misplaced belief that someone was going to try and kill them first. Also, there would always be some segment of the population engaged in some sort of revenge murder, and so forth.

However, although some people may think that harboring mean (or other) thoughts about someone may be immoral, regulation of such a happening would be very cumbersome.

Thus, in many civilized societies, laws are restricted to actions that have an effect on other individuals or society on the whole (even if it is just a perceived harm or only harm to the currently ruling government).

There are some societies that do try to fully regulate a version of their morals. Most likely, if you are able to play this game, you do not live on one of those societies.

Perhaps a good way to think of the difference is to consider "morals" as subjective, and "law" as objective manifestations of the same ideal - that humans can live together in relative peace.

  4. I get the feeling that the forum community is contributing to some kids homework with this thread.

  5. Morals is just a fancy word for not being stupid.

  6. Lets not confuse common sense with morals.

  7. You can try if you want :)

    @buddy_beast

How convenient for something to be able to exist outside of space and time, I wonder if you would be able to explain to me how that's even remotely possible?

Personally I don't think you can. It's a stock answer for the question of origins of god. (Though better than the usual "well, he has always existed" that I normally get when I ask it lol)

  8. @RIO: You can logically conceive of such a place that may exist outside of our space-time at least without creating any contradictions. Additionally, the view of the singularity that lead to the big bang is that it did not exist inside our space-time existence. Space-time was created when that singularity expanded into our universe.

Also, extra dimensional and multiverse theories (which is foundational to String Theory, and which is presently the favored theory moving towards Theory of Everything) could very well exist, if they do at all, outside of our space time.

  9. I suppose your right there, however it doesn't really strengthen the case for a singular god, or even that said being IS infact a 'god'

Tbh, for all we know were just a micro experiment and were created in some gigantic (to us) science lab

I don't know about that. If you can agree to the possible existence of a place outside of time and space then you agree to a place where "god" could exist. Of course, this is certainly not enough on its own. If that was all it took than those scientists in the giant lab would be "god". Not exactly what Christians and Muslims have in mind, certainly. =)

  11. To put this simply, we would not have morals of we are put in isolation on an island. We'll put survival over anything that would seem immoral to a society.

Add more people and a common belief on a topic is made, that's a moral and if broken the society will look down upon you.

Nuff said we have morals because groups of people have similar views on something's.

  12. @RIO. Sorry about that last post. Copy and paste accident. Just regard the last paragraph

  13. Lol that's ok. I can agree to that
