Do you ever wonder why it's wrong to kill some things, but not others? For example, it's okay to bash a rock in, but not okay to bash a human's skull in. However, why is this? What's that rule separating humans from rocks? Is it that humans are alive? It can't be, because bacteria are alive as well, and it is obviously okay to kill them. Is it rationality? It can't be that either, because babies aren't rational.
Bashing a rock in isn't going against the act of not committing murder. Also, nobody is going to classify you as 'evil' if you bash a rock in.
Without morals, we wouldn't be society. Society couldn't thrive, expand, feel and evolve with humanity, and vice versa. Morals are a humans compass to life. Right and wrong derive directly from morals.
@ people spouting god as the origin of stuff. You DO realise Christianity wasn't the first religion right? I'm assuming you also realise that the bible wasn't written by god, but by men, just plain old men. I'm also assuming you know that there would be parts of previously believed religions in Christianity. It's not the first, it certainly won't be the last Having said that, the moral lessons in the bible are pretty good as it goes. I choose my moral code based on circumstance and feeling, it is not given to me, my morals are mine to choose and are completely circumstantial.
I am not religious at all. Why? To believe in a place that hasn't been proven to exist and is only mentioned in a book that has not been proven to have true or false events is the same as believing in Platform 9 3/4 (from Harry Potter) or any other fantasy land from an obviously ficticious book. So, how do I have morals and what do I strive for? I strive to be the very best I can be, and be a leader of humanity moving forward. I always play by the rules, even when I'm losing. I will respect others' wishes, and will always be trustworthy to maintain secrets. Also, I will always use my judgement to determine the best course of action. My motto on life: Life is a game like Monopoly. You have ups and downs, and eventually the game ends. Why not have fun playing it while it lasts?
People who claim they have no morals Just stated one Morals have become secular as if those without Gods have none This should be added " People feeling above others due to religious morals are below the standards they set for others Sociologists have no real science just redefining ever smaller groups. They apply morals to groups, which is pre judging people and immoral. Often morals people claim to have they don't and never will as they feel they have achieved them Morals are like manners, you can forget them. Morals can be inconvenient or only used around people you care for.
The main reason I believe in God is because I know people will have a higher power to listen to. Death is too easy for murders. To be fair, christians that go by the bible believe that God created the earth, thus, putting it first technically, yes? The bible was written by men with the guidance from God. -- I don't know. I suppose it's a question I will be able to understand in my old age. But, I do urge some of y'all to talk with a christian who is knowledge able and open minded. From this thread, I can tell that most of y'all have come in contact with the wrong type.
I would be very curious to hear anyone's reasoning for not believing in God. Please address this politely
Because I've never felt the need to have a god, nor can I see the hand of any divine agents in the world around me. I know I'm a ghost hiding within a shell of stardust that exists due to the confluence of a billion chances each one resulting in me from amongst the infinite possible outcomes. I know I live on a world made up of my equals in impossibility but that doesn't mean it's due to anything but the laws of the universe acting upon the fabric of space and time. I have a faith in science and empirical evidence. I don't need to say the things I can't understand are the actions of an outside omnipotent force. I know planets were made by the death of stars and the movement of bodies under the influence of powers both weak and strong. These things we incredibly smart apes have shown ourselves, we've looked up and questioned the existence of everything we could see, then asked about the spaces between those things always looking for an answer. Many find their answers in places other than mine and that's part of humanity it's not a good thing or a bad thing it's just who we are and who we are most comfortable being. Nothing against those who have faith in a divine indeed I have a great deal of respect for those who profess a faith then live by it's tenets, while not trying to impose it on others.
I just don't understand how you can have a Big Bang explodes out out nothing. The only cause could come from a God that is outside of space and time.
Although I respect your opinion my friend, I was raised Christian, and eventually tuned away from it, not through any lures of any type, unless you can't curiosity as one. I was curious as to why god doesn't show himself, as to whom these people were that wrote the bible, why show himself to these people but not to anyone today. If I walked into a church and said god had visited me, would everyone think I was completely bonkers, or would they allow me to add a passage to the bible?
Morals are just societal rules that make coexistence easier. They are generaly taught to you by parents/peers through out life. As to what they mean to me theyre just things things you do to stay out of jail
Although God may not entirely show Himself, I'm not sure if He actually does or not, you can definitely tell when people are impacted by God to do something or take action or make a change. That's why I believe you wouldn't be able to write another book of the bible. You would show no signs of being impacted by God as is the case of all the other books of the bible
