It came to be durning the revolution because of religious taxes as well as how the Brits was using the bible as a weapon. Many founding fathers was not religious and did not agree to the punishment the Catholic Church was dishing out. No religion has done a good job at governing. They are too kill happy when it comes to non-believers. This is most true to the Aberhamic religions. (Catholics, Christian, Muslims, Jews, and that entire cult of believers)
As a Christian, I'd have to agree with you. Telling your child that is a terrible thing! I believe you, but, the judgement, hate and scare tactics don't sprout from religion. They sprout from people. My case and point is that you'll find atheists (people with no god what so ever) who are also terribly judge mental, use scare tactics and employ a mob mentality. (Stalin and Mao come to mind). Blaming religion for bad behavior is an attribution error. Every parent teaches their kid what they believe is right and wrong. Kids need guidance and it's the job of the parent to provide it until the child is of an age where he can challenge and then accept or reject what he's been taught
Although I agree with you that religion does a bad job of governing a populous (that's not religions job) I will disagree with you in the point that the founding fathers of America were not religious. Some were Christian, and many were "Deists" believing in some kind of God, although he may be mysterious.
Moose. Especially in the old testaments and even in the new testaments, your religion is dark. How do you not expect people to be dark from following them. It is centered around control. It depicts women as 2nd class, it even said the women should be stoned to death for a number of things including divorce. They also have to marry a man who (word is censored, a man who forces him self on a woman in a sexual way)rapes them but the (word is censored, the title of a man who forces themselves on women in a sexual way)rapist on has to pay the father for the crime. It's demented. And Jesus said that he did not overturn the Old Testament. He was there only to show the glory of the lord as well as to die for our sins so to end animal sacrifices. It still doesn't allow eating pork Still forces a women to marry he to marry men who force themselves on to the girl sexually if they pay the father (or she and he gets punished) Still does allow eating certain fish and sea life. It still allows people to own slaves unless they are Hebrew. And I don't buy the line about it being written in a time where people were less moral than they are now towards things like slavery and women. This is why. He is a god. And "all loving, all knowing God" you would think he would have a book written that would be acceptable for all, one that would stand the test of time with evolving morals and ethics. It doesn't. Because it was written by a man, to control men. The English translation is horrible from what I was told, but the context of the Old Testament is still outlandish. That is why I stopped following. And people, like Kim Davies, makes me glad I separated myself from religions. Now moose, you carry yourself well as a person and you are a good person, from what I can tell, who believes in Christianity. That is all well and fine to me. I have no issues in others believes when it doesn't effect my life or my friends or family's life. The county clerk is one of the many, many, and I am talking millions, of people in the Abrahamic religion, Namely for her, Christianity, that forces her beliefs on others. It's bull and unjust. She happens to do this in America where the Supreme Court made a decision that states not allowing the LGBT community to marry one another is unconstitutional. If she can not live by her own rights or by her own morality with that, she should have stepped down. And what makes it worse, there is nothing in the bible saying it is a sin for them to marry, it does talk a lot about divorce though. She is using her God to hate. Or allowing the media to tell her what God thinks is right. End rant.
Actually Moose was mystified by the term homophobia as he thought it only meant a fear of something and gave a fear of spiders as an example saying it increases heart rate so he doesn't understand homophobia. Sadly he wasn't aware|educated enough to realise that it can mean a hatred of gay people and you don't have to fear them like spiders to be homophobic
Hey maggot: Thanks for the post. I wanted to just lightly tough on several of your points. I'll start off with the Old Testament. Christians do not follow the Old Testament. The Jews do, but Christians do not. The Old Testament (as a whole) is the history of the Jewish people and it is a book of laws and prophesy. The New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophesy. Christ came into the world and subjected him self to the Old Testament laws, fulfilling them and ultimately, through his death and resurrection, he has freed humanity from the Old Testament laws. How does that work? Well, the best answers come from C.S.Lewis and fill up pages of text (as most answers to complex issues do) As for Davies, she's an embarrassment. Sadly, people look at her and say "look how terrible religion is". It's unfortunate. I deal with large and diverse swaths of the public in my job, and if found that asses can be found in every group, religious or non. I've also found terrific people in all groups too.
Jesus orders Christians to follow the Law of Moses in the Old Testament: "Do not think that I [Jesus] have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-18)" It is quite clear from these verses from the New Testament that Jesus peace be upon him did honor the Old Testament and did say that every single "letter" of it has to be honored, followed and fulfilled.
From what I've seen, most "homophobes" aren't homophobic, they just believ marriage should be between a man and a woman. Even Hillary Clinton once said that.
Actually...... Instead of just googling crap and selecting a definition I like, I went to the DSM (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) for the definition of what a phobia is. This is the manual that the doctors and medical professionals use to define various disorders in their respective fields. This source is much better as it's actually official. Sorry if you have a problem with the medical standard of the definition :-( According to the medical professionals, this what a phobia is Spoiler: hate isn't in the definition. PHOBIA A. Marked and persistent fear that is excessive or unreasonable, cued by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation (e.g., flying, heights, animals, receiving an injection, seeing blood). B. Exposure to the phobic stimulus almost invariably provokes an immediate anxiety response, which may take the form of a situationally bound or situationally predisposed Panic Attack. Note: In children, the anxiety may be expressed by crying, tantrums, freezing, or clinging. C. The person recognizes that the fear is excessive or unreasonable. Note: In children, this feature may be absent. D. The phobic situation(s) is avoided or else is endured with intense anxiety or distress. E. The avoidance, anxious anticipation, or distress in the feared situation(s) interferes significantly with the person's normal routine, occupational (or academic) functioning, or social activities or relationships, or there is marked distress about having the phobia. F. In individuals under age 18 years, the duration is at least 6 months. G. The anxiety, Panic Attacks, or phobic avoidance associated with the specific object or situation are not better accounted for by another mental disorder, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (e.g., fear of dirt in someone with an obsession about contamination), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (e.g., avoidance of stimuli associated with a severe stressor),Separation Anxiety Disorder (e.g., avoidance of school), Social Phobia (e.g., avoidance of social situations because of fear of embarrassment), Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia, or Agoraphobia Without History of Panic Disorder.
Nice essay . That's not the definition of homophobia tho is it? From the Oxford English Dictionary Homophobia: Dislike of or prejudice against homosexual people You said you didn't understand why people said homophobia you can't see how people would be afraid of them like people are of spiders. Perhaps if you knew the definitions of what you're trying to talk about we wouldn't be having this conversation Moose
Oxford English Dictionary Homophobia "Dislike of or prejudice against homosexual people". Like I said you don't know what you're talking about and just rambling ... Plus it's "whether" not weather for your sentence
I hate that actually. I hate that people employ judgment, hate and scare tactics to compensate for their weaknesses. I get that all of us are human and that it's written into our genes to have that sort of behavior, but I don't like it either way. Sure, when I was younger, I may have fallen into the mob mentality at certain moments but after taking AP psych and learning all about the study, I've become aware of it and chosen to stray away from it. I like to be different that way. I'm not like others when someone gets stabbed and people start screaming behind me, I look and stay calm so as to not arouse further panic by others. Anyways. Now I will address those pointing at Moose's thoughts on the definition of homophobia as incorrect. I believe that Moose is correct to a certain degree but the term homophobia has been used more loosely to describe dislike of homosexuals in the mainstream media. As such, the definition you see today is the result of the word's usage which has become standard, just as new syntax arises within languages to keep up with current trends. I feel that I do not dislike homosexuals though; I accept that sexuality. It's always existed throughout history- it's almost natural and innate. Not natural and innate for me as I have always been straight---attracted to women only.
