The fang event was supposed to be updated with the best paying ebs rotated iirc. That didn't happen, that was the devs fault, it could of been a really good event.

No, we arent physically forced to participate buy many in osw like to have competitive eq though. And for awhile it was almost like you had to choose to avoid osw if you needed some new eq or such.
