Giant Magellan Telescope (Space Discussion)

  1. Why?

  2. When was the last time god spoke to you and said you are the only experiment I have tried?

People with faith are just as capable of being scientists as any other. It is actually quite interesting to see the scientists of faith and those without debate topics and draw different or the same conclusions.

It's when experiments fail that understanding grows.
If success was easy everyone would achieve everything they want in life.
Better still of interested. Though I won't advertise specific sites there are sites devoted for contributors to add their own research to mass sourced databases. Doing everything from tracking stars to medical research. Have a few hours a week to kill. Google the type that would appeal to you and get involved for yourself.

  3. If God has the power to create life on earth and made trillions of galaxies then God has also power to create life in other galaxies if you believe in power of God then you should believe in other life but if you doubt the power of God then you are not believing in god. You are doubting his power that makes you a person who doesn't believe in god . Believe in god and believe he can and create any life any where in those trillions of galaxies

  4. Without getting into too many specifics, back in the 60's Frank Drake proposed a thought experiment to stimulate discussion on the possibility of life on other worlds--and communicative life at that. Based on x number of stars having planets around them, and of those stars only a certain percentage were in the habitable zone, and of those in the habitable zone which had water, etc. etc. etc.

The Drake Equation presumed, among other things, that planets around stars were very rare (on the order of one in 10,000) and of those planets in the habitable zone were also very small (1 in about 1,500). So just the first two criteria for his thought experiment said that one in 15 million stars would have a planet in the habitable zone. Even at those numbers (and considering all of the other factors), it was theorizied that that there were millions of planets in our own milky way galaxy with life on them (admittedly all of this is theory--but roll with it).

Recent discoveries of exoplanets have led scientists to drastically change the first two factors of the Drake Equation. Now the likelihood of a star having a planet in the habitable zone stands at about 1 in 13 --- much lower than the 1 in 15,000,000 orighinally thought. Assuming the other factors of the drake equation hold (and of course they are guesstimates so they may change), there may be literally billions of planets with life on them in our own milky way.

Personally, I don't think it will take hundreds of years to establish that. I give it a decade. I know I could be wrong -- but hope I am not.

    Cheers,

    Kage.

  5. If you read the bible it says that God only created life on earth soooo...?

  6. Exactly.

  7. Where?

  8. Know where does the bible say God created life on only this world.

  9. Not everyone who believes in a God is a Christian, and I'm not familiar with the part of the Bible that says Yahweh only created life on earth.

  10. Look it up lol

  11. you're an idiot. the Bible does NOT say that he ONLY created life on Earth

  12. Great post! Love reading things about space.
Read one article the other day about nasa wanting to send a "sub" to Titan ( saturns largest moon) to explore Kraken Mare.... Truly fascinating stuff.

  13. Very nice thread, Seth, an interesting read.

Spent some time browsing through Hubble ST, GMT and other telescope related websites at work today. Nice reminder of my times spent in physics research a long time ago.

GMT is quite impressive as due to modern correction methods it will be able to provide higher resolution than Hubble and even its planned successor JWST at a lower maintenance cost. Those mirrors are really impressive...

  14. There is nothing to look up Bio. The bible doesn't say that. But since you say it does, YOU look it up. Don't make other people support your arguments for you.

  15. Ok think about it like this, if God says he wants no idols before him and your focus is more on giving attention to finding aliens, what would you make as an idol? (Thing more important than God) if you barely give attention to the things of God and are more focused on yourself then you believe in your own image of God. I don't believe in god, my dad does and we always argue

  16. I'm a huge space geek but I didn't even know wtf a parabolic mirror was until now

  17. Why bring religion into what was a lovely topic? Please don't ruin it

  18.
  19. Sad how people need to insult because they cannot come with a reasonable argument. Then a mod comes and cries  why can any other topic BUT religion be written up in Forums? Biased much ?

  20. I know, next we'll have religion trolls…

Back on topic, maybe its a good thing we don't have any other inhabitated planets nearby. Humans go by the fact of "We come in peace but leave with everything." New technology can be viable for wars between humans, comparing 2 big nations is like a twin brother and sister in a shared bedroom. Very unpredictable and violent.
