Debate: "Designer Babies"

I think its fine but only to remove common problems that the child can inherit like, disease etc. But I don't agree that you should be able to completely 'design' your baby. I also don't see how its playing god, when if god made us, then he gave us the brains to be able to develop such things. Maybe this was his intention of developing the human race..

 

The only comment I have to make here is, if a family is genetically linked to certain illness / disease or condition that directly effects the babies life or quality of life and a designer gene would eliminate that threat to their health then and only then is it acceptable.

Blue eyes, blonde hair etc is a total abuse and totally undermines the pleasure of having your own unique child.

Anything that changes the make up of a person outside of medical improvement for a real illness ( being dumb unfortunately is natural not a disease ( in most cases )) is morally wrong in my opinion for what it's worth.

 

I think the only rational and responsible response to the question of designer babies would be best explained by my friend Mr Morgan..

I personally would want to see it expanded such that when humans are born, they are already immune to things like malaria.

I would also like to see the introduction of genes that can improve intelligence (again, because it will improve their quality of life immensely through better work skills)

The number one biggest pitfall that there is, however, is if there is a flawed genetic design that makes it so that a genetic mod causes more problems than it fixes.

So being aware of potential abuse of this means I'm terrified of it? No.

Humans aren't trustworthy, we have proved it for thousands of years, we mistreat other people, animals, the planet. Winning and profit is more important to most of us.

Unfortunately, as much as I would love to see the eradication of deadly diseases, it would do the human race no good, we already live too long, reproduce too often and don't look after the planet. This technology WOULD be used for personal gain, just like every other technology has been.
