Well, you see, our rotation is caused by the molten lava at our earths core that somehow spins or something. It goes around in a circle. This is what also controls our gravity. If earth stood still, then the molten lava at our core has stopped moving. Which would cease our gravitational pull to the earth. This why the moon has no gravity. It has some, but not enough to where if you jump too high, it'll pull you down.
The Earth revolves because of a possible impact in the history of our little planet. Gravity is caused by mass and acceleration, meaning that you can still have gravity with or without acceleration. The molten lava at our core does nothing to our gravitational state nor our rotation around the Earth's axis or the Sun.
Well I guess the public school system lies to everyone and also the history channel/scientist for that matter.
Noooo! Just no! Have you ever been on a carousel? Which way the forces are pulling you, inside or outside? The earth spinning around its own axis has nothing to do with gravity. The gravity we all experience is... just due to the mass of the earth! This is classical newtonian mechanics. If the moon stopped rotating around the earth, it would be pulled towards the earth due to gravity. Due to the rotation, the fleeing forces the moon experiences are counterbalancing the earth's gravitational pull. The same equilibrium stands for the earth rotating around the sun. Have a read about Keppler. The moon's lower gravity is due to its... lower mass, that's all. The same would be true on Mars. On Jupiter, gravity would crush you...
I meant it as in our position is fixed around the sun. Nothing can actually stop moving in space due to the movement of galaxies and such.
Newton only made 3 laws. I. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. II. The relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. Acceleration and force are vectors (as indicated by their symbols being displayed in slant bold font); in this law the direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector. III. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I believe 3 sums it up. The action, earths spinning. Reaction-gravity. Look at it this way, zero gravity, it's an amusement parK ride, in fact does not give you zero gravity. It's spinning so fast on its axis, that it sucks you to the wall. The earth is spinning at just the right speed to keep you to the ground. Your argument is invalid.
then yeah  currently the earth's accelaration is 0 @whoever said earth has to accelarate for gravity
Farr, you were right with most you said but that's pretty wrong. Your equation is right but has nothing to do with gravity at all. It just describes the force a mass experiences due to an acceleration. Gravity is an acceleration!!! In the case of gravity, your equation gets: F=mg, describing the force you experience due to the gravitational pull (acceleration) of the earth/whatever.
If im not wrong, the attraction pushes you away to the wall. If you apply that to earth we will be slung into space, right?
DN, first you say gravity is bc of earths mass. Now your saying it's due to acceleration? Umm, pretty sure the second is correct. The earth is accelerating, which is the cause of our gravity. If the earth stopped its acceleration, our gravity ceases to exist.
A brick of 1Kg has a gravity of 1 * 9,8N on earth. You are right though, g = a so i guess im right too
Both are true, the accelerating is caused by the earth's mass. And the earth has no acceleration. It is moving with a constant speed through space.
Let's stop trying to figure out gravity. There's a reason no one has done that yet. All they know is what effect it has and how it's generated.
No, I am not saying that gravity is due to some acceleration. Gravity is an acceleration you will experience towards a body of a certain mass and it is only due to that mass. And Farr has it right. On an amusement park ride you fly to the outer wall, never be sucked to the inside one. You can create a zero gravity environment on earth (there certainly are amusement park rides doing it for a very short period of time). Therefore you need to counteract the gravitational pull of the earth by an opposite equal force. Typically you'll see that on the top of a roller coaster rise. I remember researcher colleagues doing experiments in zero gravity environments that were done in a plane flying elliptic ways, they were all sick like dogs, lol.
