Am I better off doing the "free nob" offers that don't work?

 

^ That's hard to answer. The Non-Survey ones work pretty well (or so I hear, I haven't done any). However questing is more reliable in a sense, it's so rare to get a nob you'd be luckier finding a clan letting you take pots on a clan seal 
