I am writing a Book Called the Diseased. It is about Survival in the Wake of the Zombie apocalypse, using tried and true survival techniques. The book is currently in Publishing Limbo. Expect Copies by the end of the Year. For Information on the Types of Zombies, see my Neighboring thread in off topic. Here's a Sample. Alex looked up, and saw the helicopter, Hovering above the Fort, and knew it was time to go. He revved the engine, and then shifted into drive, Speeding out the driveway, just behind the Helicopter. “You know, we may not make it out of this one?” Alex asked Kimber, over the wind. “I know. But if we go, we will go down in flames, huh?” replied Kimber, grinning from ear to ear. She held her Kimber 9mm Gun in her left hand, and a G-Mal on her back. “Impressive, but Twisted Logic.” remarked Alex. Outside, the road ripped by, as Alex accelerated to 70 MPH. “I try.” laughed Kimber. It was a 50 Mile trip to the Interception point. The Chopper was ahead slightly, and Alex could see Jack waving at him, from the door of the chopper. The rest of the way, everyone was relatively quiet. Not a word was uttered by everyone. Kimber checked her gun twice. The trip was quick, and when they were almost to the Interception Point, Alex's Walkie-Talkie Chirped by his side. “Killa to Hunter, Prepare for Interception, Over.” “Roger that, Killa. Approaching interception point. Go ahead for Operation Heatwave, Over.” replied Alex. Myra maneuvered the Chopper ahead, and then they saw the Horde. Jack later stated that it was the largest Horde he had ever seen. It was spread out for almost a Mile. Myra guessed there was almost a Thousand of them. More than anyone had believed possible. For a moment she was shocked, then she regained her senses, and radioed to Alex. “This is Killa, Horde Number, is extremely large, almost a thousand or more. Do we proceed with Operation Heatwave? Over.” “Killa, this is Hunter... Damn that's big... um... Yes. Proceed. Over and Out.” Back in the Car, Alex saw The Chopper open fire, then the Piercing Scream of the Diseased. He Accelerated ahead, and exploded off of the On Ramp, into the Middle of the Horde. “Time to see what this baby can do!” Alex yelled, then Slammed on the Gas Pedal, using the Grill to send Diseased flying left and right. In the backseat, Calvin opened fire, Sending parts flying in all directions. Alex started down the freeway at 60 MPH, toward the Roadblock ten miles down. The Diseased all around him began screaming, and attacking the car. “Hang on!” he yelled, as he jerked the wheel, and went off-road, jumping onto the frontage road. He knew he had to get ahead of the Horde, otherwise he was toast. He sped up to 80 MPH, and slowly began to pull ahead, with the Diseased running full speed behind him. Calvin, and Brendan were using the turrets to Keep the Diseased off of Alex, as was Calvin. Any that came too Close, were vaporized by M60 Bullets, from three different directions. Alex kept up his speed on the side road. Once he saw an opening in the fence between the Highway, and Side road, he Veered off, and jumped back onto the Highway, causing a jam in the Diseased, where the fence bottle necked. He sped down the road, occasionally dodging cars, and keeping the Horde off of his tail. “The roadblock shouldn't be much farther!” he yelled over the wind. The Diseased were gaining on him, and Calvin stopped shooting, to load another belt of ammo. “Crap, crap, crap!” Muttered Calvin, fumbling with the second belt, and attempting to feed it into the slot. “What's going on back there?” Yelled Alex, Skidding around a corner, then accelerating on the straight Stretch. “The...Damned Ammo Belt...won't go in!” grunted Calvin. The end finally slipped in, and Calvin began firing again. Alex rounded a final corner, when he finally saw the Roadblock. Concrete Dividers had been moved from the Center of the Highway, and now blocked the road. Crouched behind the Roadblocks, were Fifteen men, armed with AK-47's. Two more were positioned at M60 Machine guns. Alex Throttled the Car, and sped ahead, into a small void in the wall. It was immediately closed behind him, By two of the Men. Behind them, Alex heard the men at the roadblock begin firing. The firing held the Diseased off for a moment, and Alex breathed a sigh of relief, when suddenly, a Juggernaut in the front ranks, picked up a Mutant. “What the hell is that thing doing?” asked Alex pointing at the Diseased. “Oh wait... CRAP!” The Juggernaut hurled the Mutant with all of its might, at the ranks of men behind the roadblock. The Mutant slammed into a Divider, Crunching the top, and knocking it over on top of the Man behind it. The Juggernaut caught on to the idea, and began hurling Diseased after Diseased in the direction of the men. The ones whose brains weren't crushed on the impact, rose up behind the men, and attacked from behind. Calvin began firing again, when it became obvious that the Men were overwhelmed. Most were laying dead, being devoured. And the remaining ones were either being attacked, or running in an attempt to escape certain death. “Myra! Did you see that?” Alex radioed up to Myra, completely forgetting Codenames. “Yes! We're opening fire now!” Above, the turrets came to life, firing at every Diseased. Alex spun the wheels on the Corvette, taking off, down the road. The Juggernaut that had developed a nice throwing arm turned his attention to the Car, and thundered down the road after them, followed by the remainder of the horde, which was just under 700. “They're coming after us! Do something now!” Calvin yelled, over the thunder of the M60. Alex flipped down the windshield, and spun the car around. “Turn the M60 around!” yelled Alex. Calvin jumped onto the toolbox, out the back window, and turned the Turret to face between the two seats. The Diseased were directly in front of the car, when Calvin opened fire, firing directly between the seats. Kimber later related the experience of bullets shooting past her head, as something she wouldn't soon repeat. Alex accelerated through the Horde, which Rammed the car, and jumped at it. One jumped onto the hood, almost through the windshield, but was blasted away by Calvin. The sticky blood splattered Kimber and Alex. “Wipe it off! Don't swallow it!” Yelled Alex, wiping the Blood out of his eyes and face with his arm. Kimber wiped it away as well, her eyes widening at the Horde they were speeding through. “Where the hell are we going?!” asked Kimber, careful to stay away from the spray of gunfire in between her and Alex. “To the Fort!” Alex yelled back, “There's too many, and we can fight back if we get there!” Alex slowed slightly to go down the exit, then skidded around the turn. He accelerated down the road toward the fort, with the Diseased on their tails. Calvin slowly, and carefully held onto the Turret, as he climbed back into the backseat. He turned the turret around and fed another belt in, firing at the Horde. Alex hit ninety MPH, slowly putting distance between the Car and the Diseased. He slowed coming up to a car block, going around, then sped back up to ninety. There was a Considerable distance between Alex and the Horde, when suddenly, a blur flashed by the car. “What the...” Alex began, as the form splattered against the pavement ahead of them. In the rear view, the Juggernaut hurled another Diseased, which barely missed, falling just short. “Alex, Come on! Before he finds his range!” Calvin said, now out of ammo. Alex sped up to 100 MPH. The Diseased that were hurled surely didn't survive the impact. Alex slowed when the Fort came into sight. “What are you doing?” exclaimed Calvin, looking at Alex. “Slowing down. If we hit the off road at this speed, we're dead.” replied Alex. “If we slow down too much, we're dead too!” said Calvin. They hit the driveway, with a loud thump, and then recovered, speeding up the driveway, and leaving a cloud of dust behind. Occasionally, a flying body would emerge through the cloud of dust. They zoomed through the open gates, with Calvin yelling through the back, 'Close the Gates!' The few Diseased that made it in the new gates, were cut down by Gunfire from different Directions. Alex skidded to a stop, killed the engine, then bailed out of the Drivers seat, his gun drawn. Give me what you think, and I will give more samples of other parts. Thanks, Zeth
The Death of Connor “This is Mad Max, Hostiles moving outside... Boom. There goes one... two. Two Down, and Counting, Over.” “Roger that, Mad Max, this is Hunter, Keep it coming. Over.” From somewhere outside, Alex heard a loud explosion, that shook the ground. “This is Killa, and that was their Heli-Pad. Over.” “Roger, Over and out.” Alex said, kicking open the next door. The interior was something of a control room. A Still steaming cup of coffee sat on a desk, and Alex saw its owners jogging down the hallway, in the opposite direction. On the bridge, Connor was firing at the Terrified Raptors evacuating the building. His Body count was up to Ten, and still counting. He was an efficient killer. The SLAP Targets were proving effective, if not overkill. They didn't just kill their target. They obliterated it. The entrance wound was not half as bad as the pink/red vapor that sprayed out behind it. The Raptors dove behind walls, and fired blindly into the direction the shots were coming from. The Bullets sprayed in all directions, but hit nothing. Alex started down another stairway. If he was correct, this next floor would be the Cache. It would also be Guarded. With Calvin, Kimber, Daxman, Lauren, and Carlos behind him, he busted open the door. They emerged, knee deep in a full out firefight. Alex returned fire, then rolled to a Column. He darted out from behind it occasionally, to fire, but couldn't see what he was shooting for. Across from him, Calvin ran out of ammo for his Tactical Shotgun. He pulled out an older model of Alex's gun, and began to fire into the barrage of Gunfire. “Don't hit the Explosives!” Alex exclaimed, seeing the pile against the wall. He switched his SAR Rifle to full auto, attempting to draw attention to him, giving Kimber a chance to sprint out of her pinned position. He saw Kimber fire at the closest Raptor, as she ran, and making contact, dropping him. Calvin ran out of ammo for his Springfield, and Alex tossed him a spare Magazine, across the hallway. He pulled two 600 Lumen Stun Lights out of his pocket, clipping them onto both of his Handguns, then Signaled for Calvin to do the same. Calvin produced one of the lights too, and clipped it on. Lauren raised up to shoot off repressive fire, and was hit in the shoulder by a 9mm Hollow Point. The Shot barely missed her Kevlar Jacket, and hit in the bone structure. The Impact knocked her down. It was pitch black outside, and in the hallway, the only light was the overheads. Alex shot each one out, then Turned on his Stun Lights. The effect was instant. The Only lights were flashing at a rapid rate, making it almost impossible to Pinpoint them. Behind the light, and wearing the Glasses, Alex could make out the forms of the Raptors, covering their eyes, and shooting Blindly at the lights. He, and Calvin, picked them off one by one. Then, they both flipped the switches on their lights, making them steady, and making sure everyone was alright. Everyone was alright, except Lauren, who had been shot in the shoulder. The Cache was right there, and he radioed to Myra. “Planting Charge Now. We've got a Wounded. Be ready to make a Hasty exit. Over.” “Roger that. Over and Out.” He pulled the Rectangular C4 Charge from his Pocket. He attached it to the Pile, then ran towards the other. Brendan, and Calvin helped Lauren, and the rest hurried up the stairs. They reached the Top, and hustled over to the hill, where Myra was Hovering the Helicopter, Barely Touching the Ground. They Jumped in, and let loose a wall of fire, as Raptors ran up, trying to stop them. One of them was Blown away by Connor, and the rest by Alex and Calvin. The Helicopter rose slightly higher, flying over the bridge, to pick up Connor. He grabbed hold of the handle on the Helicopter, and was pulling himself up, when he heard a motor, and firing. A Raptor Humvee was speeding across the bridge, the passenger firing. One of the Rounds hit Connor in the stomach. It didn't pierce, due to his Kevlar, but it knocked him to the ground. He rose up, trying to grab hold of the chopper again. As he got the handle, they began to raise up, trying to avoid a collision with the Humvee. The Vehicle sped just underneath, missing the Helicopter, but Clipping Connor's Knees. The Impact surely broke them, as the Vehicle was doing at least 70 Mph, and he fell, smacking hard against the pavement. Up the bridge, the Vehicle Spun around, ready for another run, and hit the throttle. Alex and Calvin fired at the Driver, but the rounds wouldn't pierce the windshield. Below, Connor was stirring, barely raising up, and trying to push himself off of the ground. He was hurt badly, but still tried to keep going. The Humvee was nearing, when they began shooting for the Tires. Then it sped under the Chopper. Connor heard it coming, and looked, then just put his hand up, giving a half salute to Alex and Calvin. His face was raw, and bloody, and he was missing a tooth. His other arm was most definitely broken, as were both of his legs. Then he gave a bloody grin. Dude, Just Stop. He thought. “Ah... Crap.” he mumbled, trying to roll out of the way. Then he didn't feel anything. The Large Tires were unforgiving, as they sped over him. Alex screamed, then fired three more shots, then heard the click of his empty weapon. One of the shots punctured a tire, or maybe ricocheted and punctured it, but the vehicle swerved, lost control, then hit a guard rail, and flipped over the side of the bridge. The Concrete Guard rail crumbled. Alex didn't want to look at Connor, or what was left of him. He flipped the switch on the remote, and at first there was a muffled crunch, then a fireball ripped through the weak points in the walls, and Columns holding the structure together. There were other Caches on other floors, that would inevitably blow as well, thus eliminating the Danger of Hoover Dam. The first three floors crumbled, falling in chunks. Then the still traveling fireball on the interior reached the next cache, creating yet another explosion. It punched a hole in the solid concrete, erupting out into the night air. The Helicopter made one last pass around the dam, Shooting any stragglers, and blowing up more Vehicles, then Silently rose into the night sky, the turrets still smoking.

Diseased Update: First Story is Finished, and in Last editing phases. One publisher looking at it. Just Started on "The Infected", the Sequel, and got about 10 pages done on "The Pandemic", a prequel covering years 1-3 of the Disease. Also, wanted to let any fans of these samples know that I will post more soon, when I log into my Computer Alt Next.
1,000 seems a pretty standard sized group, also, how fast do those infected run, dam, they're like zombies from Kenya on steroids. But apart from that the writings pretty good.
Haha, yeah. Well, as many prefer the slow, stupid type of Zombies, I would just skip around in front of them, with a Gattling gun on wheels. So I made something different. The top one of them runs in the story is 70-80 MPH. At first they are just unusually fast, but the Virus can evolve. The Virus works like this. (Oh boy here we go.) A Parasite Takes over the brain, (much like it already does in rats) and Causes the brain to slowly cease working. This causes all Bodily systems to Cease working as well. The infection Period is about 10-12 Hours, depending upon the resistance. Once the body is completely dead, the parasite kick starts the brain, diverting all blood flow to certain areas, essential to movement, etc. The respiratory system is Gone. All Digestive Abilities. Anything but blood flow to keep the brain alive, and enough for the limbs. They are semi smart, (as shown by the juggernaut heaving other diseased) and can learn, albeit at a snails pace, and nothing more than basic stuff.
Except without oxygen, blood doesn't contain the nutrients needed to sustain the muscles, you'd be better to go with a fungus that spreads throughout the veins and sprouts out the body, producing the required energy from sunlight that is needed to sustain a human body, still far fetched but you know, biology xD
Well, maybe the Virus Goes trough the sages, kills them, then jumps starts their hearts and brains. It keeps the Respiratory System working, but only what is necessary to keep them alive. Nothing Over the Top. No Digesting. etc. Essentially instead of Undead, Just Infected Humans.
Or the virus just kicks everything into hyperdrive, which results in the infected having a terrific hunger for things that are high in energy (flesh). Trouble is that after a few days of no food they'd die, so you could alter it by saying they can kick themselves into hyperdrive when they need to, at all other times all their systems are slowed down to preserve energy.
A zombie out break isn't impossible to happen naturally. Its just difficult. For it to be a virus, the parts exist in nature, but for all of them to come together to create one virus that is just right...one that is as virulant as influenza, measles for the personality change and ensephalitus to cook the brain..that would be like the apocalyptic lottery ticket. A rich mad scientist that is a genius in the field of virology might be a way to go. It could also be a bacteria that targets specificly the frontal lobe that is transmitted through bodily fluids but this has been done very recently in the new novel The Remaining, which was absolutely awesome, by the way. In any event, good luck zeth. Hope your endeavor works out for you.
