Surprise I went to bed early the night before my birthday, as I had always done. I didn’t see the point in trying to sleep because knew it would take hours but tradition is tradition I suppose. So I curled up under my quilt and wondered how my family would try to surprise me tomorrow. I also was feeling sort of sad, we were moving soon. This was to be my last birthday at the home I had lived in all my life and moving away would spoil everything. Every year on our birthdays Dad would stand whoever birthday it was up against the wall and mark our height. Moving away meant never finally having my mark higher than my brother. I supposed the thing I would have missed the most was my best friend. I wasn’t popular at all but I was still happy. My friend was called Lizzy and although she was quiet around everyone else when she was with me we were loud, excitable and we generally had loads of fun. At that point I hadn’t even told her we were moving yet; I didn’t want to ruin things between us. I must have drifted of eventually because when I opened my eyes my parents and my brother were stood there smiling with a big pile of presents. I jumped up and hugged my brother then both my parents. Birthdays were always very special in our household. We always have a massive feast full of the food we love and get load of presents. “Come on Beth open your presents! I’ve packed your school bag for you by the way.” my brother yelled. I smiled at him, “Thanks Tommy!” I spent the rest of the two hours before school opening presents and eating my breakfast of pancakes. I loved birthdays. The only thing that I wasn’t looking forwards to was school but I supposed I would have to get on with it.
