  1. Anyone go on a rei backpacking travel trip before?

    Interested in hearing your experiences.

  2. Did a Kamchatka trip w/ REI, it was splendid.

  3. No but sounds like fun. Hiking the pct or a portion of it, is on my bucket list if I ever get to it .

  4. If you have travelled with rei

    - do you feel that they taught you well enough so you could backpack on your own

    - I have done strenuous hikes such as half dome in Yosemite but I know backpacking is clearly a different type of monster. I was told that since I've never done backpacking that I should do a 3 or 3.5 level (out of 5) - do you agree?

  5. Backpacking takes a large investment to get all the gear you need for it, so going out on an REI trip where they provide most/all of the gear is a good idea. Figure out if you like it first. Then if you do, invest in good gear.

They will also teach you a lot of basic backpacking skills. I never did the REI trip, I just went out and did a 2-night trip in Hetch Hetchy to learn on my own. Next trip is a thru hike of the JMT!
