Racial Names in Pro/College Sports

  1. Discussion Time!

My topic today has to deal with racial issues involving sports' mascots and Native Americans! So exciting!

So, lately, the issue pertaining whether or not the NFL's Washington Redskins have a discriminative name or not. Many people who are of Native American descent have blasted the NFL. They've protested all they can, making billboards, boycotting, and even broadcasting a commercial onto live television. The NFL has gotten blasted by many, and many are trying to force them to force Washington to change the Redskin name.

Yes, the name 'Redskin' can be used as a derogatory term for Native Americans, and yes I can see where they are coming from. However, how is this any worse than other teams in other sports?

    You've got:

    -Atlanta Braves
    -Florida State Seminoles
    -Cleveland Indians
    -Kansas City Chiefs
    -Chicago Blackhawks

You don't hear any of these teams under fire. They all have some sort of Native American logo. A few even have the 'Tomahawk Chop'. Florida State has a 'Native American' in a 'Native American costume' riding in on a horse, then throwing a spear into the middle of a Native American logo every home game. HOW IS THAT NOT RACIST?!? I mean, if the Redskins are getting this much heat for their name, why aren't these popular teams receiving heat as well?

Do I believe that the Redskins should switch their name? Yes. But, if they are forced to change everything, so should other teams. The heat that they are receiving is, in my opinion, deserved. Their team name can be found offensive, so should be switched. The Washington Bullets received the same type of controversy, and eventually switched their name and logo. The Redskins should do the same.

Basically, if one team is forced to change names, so should another. I believe it should be all or none.

A few questions for you guys:

Should the Redskins switch their name?

Should the other teams be forced to switch their names as well?

Do you agree with this all or none way of doing it?

    Thoughts? Opinions?

  2. I'm on fire with the threads today!

  3. No support

Yes the redskins should change there names

  4. Yes, I think they should too... But how about the other teams?

  5. Dude just leave them alone football is a mans sport.. It's for the tough some say they're "warriors" well the native Americans were "warriors" they killed and fought hard that's why that's their name its an honor and a cool name if you ask me! People just want something to ***** about if you don't like them don't pull for them

  6. No they should not change their name. If the owner of the team and players/ coaching staff did not find pride in that name why would they keep it?

  7. What hulk said. They have had that name for some time now. You're the first person i have ever seen to ***** about 'Racial' football names.

  8. Btw race was never mentioned by anyone no one has said anything derogatory.. Also the Redskins have donated so much money to Native American communities and built parks as well if anything it is an honor ... Are the Giants midget haters? Do the colts hate grown horses ? Do the Browns hate white people ?

  9. The race issue has been mentioned many, many times. I'm not the first person bringing it up. Many organizations are urging the NFL to force a name change for the Redskins

  10. Chicago and Cleveland are the only two up there with discuss able names. I think all 3 of em, Chicago, Cleveland, and Washington should have to change their names.

I find its not a matter of what's "right" or wrong. However, a matter of what the people think. Even though we all agree these names are disrespectful, no one would bother changing them unless the people started complaining.

To be honest, I think the NFL will eventually force Washington to change its name, however, the other ones will slip by.

Edit: Hulk makes a valiant point, however, the actual people who the name is referring to dont like it. And if they don't like it, it's considered racist. You just might not see it because your not a First Nation.

  11. You obviously don't know what racism means I'll put it in simple terms .. Putting down ALL of a race and as I stated not all natives say it's bad the Redskins help MANY native communities.. I disagree it isn't disrespectful at all I'm native you dumb fucks just want something to raise hell about you're all probably white as toilet paper... Leave the team alone.. And if you say it offends people it has to be changed. Okay well Cowboys offend me giants offend me cause I'm short. Hey you get the point now? /lock
