A Brief History of Quoting Since the introduction of the easy quote button to handheld devices, people have been able to quote each other easier than ever. Once only on PC, the quote button has become a source of post count farming and annoying quoting of the OP. However, people have always been able to quote others; they may not have realized it. How Does One Quote? One may quote by using the quote button, which inserts the BBCoding for them, or they may type in the BBCoding manually. All you have to do is type this in: quote="Charlie"]I like turtles.[/quote Add the "[" on the front end and the "]" on the back end. It will show up like this: Now for the main point of the thread. The Do's and Don't's of Quoting Do: Make Quotes Brief Instead of including all the parts about what the person you're quoting had for dinner, include the parts that people actually care about. For example, instead of this: Say this: Or, if you really care about food, quote the other part. Don't: Falsely Quote It is a common sense thing. Don't falsify what others say by butchering their statements. Do: Add-On to the Quote Make the Kawmunity know your reason for quoting said person. For example: ------------------------------------ "Posted by Random Person" Yes, I agree with you. ------------------------------------ This way, Lance knows you are supporting his statement. Don't: Quote the Entire OP Once again, quote snippets of the OP that you want to comment on. Or, don't comment at all. When people read a thread, they don't need to read it again. Especially if the OP is a giant statement with tons of pictures and characters. Do: Make Your Comment Relevant to the Quote If you are going to quote someone, make sure your post relates to the quote. Make separate posts if needed to address individual points. Or, if you don't want to make more than one post, indicate that you are not talking about the quote anymore. Don't: Use Quotes to Post Count Farm Some people, in order to keep their post count up, quote someone and add nothing to their statement. Do not be one of those people. All in all, just use common sense. If you guys have more things you want me to add to the list, I will add them. Those are just the things I thought about.
"wordwaster wrote: Quoting should only be used when it would not otherwise be clear what post you are replying to."
Just because someone wants to contribute positively to their community does not mean they want to be a valiant knight, nor does it mean they want a sticky. I'm just addressing problems that I see people discussing currently in forums.
You forgot to remind people to scroll to the end of the quote. So they don't put their comment mid quote
I honestly have lost respect for you, Troll. You go around and hate on decent threads, simple because they're better than your comments. Please, instead of being an ass, be productive. Critique it, don't belittle a thread.
I will cry myself to bed tonight because the sethosaurusrex lost respect for me. There's already a thread in AT about this. The one where everyone was banned for just copying op, another necessary? I think not. Anyhow I'm off
Troll, this thread is a guide to quoting. The other thread is a complaint about quoting OP, need an example?
