As for your first question, there are plenty of trails and things like that for hiking in the smokey mountains. They are all safe and have rangers. I can't answer your second question as the last time I was there (last year) all my meals were home cooked as I was staying in a cabin.

Btw. Slight correction.. It's Mammoth Cave (one cave system).. I have done various packages there (no not the full splunking) and they were all awesome..

If anyone remembers my post from last year

I hiked 12 national parks in the west and Midwest - drove 5k miles, hiked over 200 miles in about a month. I had an amazing time and one day I want to redo the trip in a more slower relaxed manner. I really didn't have expectations - but the parks r wonderful, awe inspiring and breathtaking... I feel like I left a piece of me there

Very greatful to ppl who posted on that thread - their tips will b used on this trip

Great choice for caving hiking, I suggest taking light jacket, long pants while in the caves, that cave system stays moist and cool. The park system tours are great and are available in all skill levels.

I don't know your skill level/experience, but if just starting out, put a small pen light and chem light in your pocket, even if only doing guided tour.

On the hiking in Tenn. be prepared for poison ivy / oak and bugs. Also be aware of copperhead snake this time of year.

    Was gonna bring head lamp

I have a mag light too

Better to wear jeans or polyester athletic longs?

  13. Re: questions: hiking in Kentucky any Tennessee

I remember that and I remember you haven't heard out of you in a while until now. Nice to see you around.

  14. Re: questions: hiking in Kentucky any Tennessee

Just buy trail pants, go to your local Camping World. I'm sure they have everything you need

I don't know how much you should trust some of this advice.
    But good luck

Get pants that can be undone into shorts. My suggestion also is to get water purifier tablets in case you get lost or need to drink dirty water. I'd wear breathable shirts so your sweat doesn't give you a rash.

Carry the 10 essentials with you, you'll need to carry these in what I call a day pack.

    -Water
    -trail food
    -rain protection
    -Sun block/sun protective clothing
    -First aid kit
-Trash bags to clean up your mess you leave
    -Good hiking boots
    -an extra set of clothes
    -Compass and map
    -Whistle
    Optional
-Music player or instrument so you keep yourself busy
-Toiler paper trust me you'll want to bring it.

I know it sounds like a lot but you need to be ready for any senario.

Mind that I do hiking in the Sierra Mountains often and carry what I need for a day of hiking. I set up camp at the camp grounds. Also before you go anywhere tell someone where you are going to hike, what trails and such.

Asheville, NC ;) trust me it's worth the visit.

  19. Re: questions: hiking in Kentucky any Tennessee

I have snake bite kit - I hear copper head bites arent fatal but hurts like a mother...

I have all those things listed

Only need blister bandaid - they are awesome. Had a bunch of blisters and when I put them on - it felt like they weren't there
