Yesterday (Feb 4th), the GOP introduced a bill to include women in the USA selective service draft. According to the Wall Street Journal (source), women have been excluded from the selective service draft "as long as women weren't allowed in combat units." That supreme court wording was issued in 1981. Today, women are included in combat units, and are highly successful in many roles of the military branches. I personally have a good friend whom was a female army medic, and she is an outstanding role model for our youth who look up to her for inspiration. I personally feel that selective service (draft) should be male only though, and adhere to the traditional male role of protecting women and children. I understand some would feel differently, but the traditional role of men has held the country together since it's founding. Even one of the bill sponsors says he might vote against it, but he wanted to put it out for so it could be discussed on congressional record. So.. USA citizens: what say you? Many of our allies overseas have implemented drafts of both male and female genders. Should the US, with today's technological advancements, draft women as well? Women are proving to be statistically better in grade school performance, so this may become factor in congressional discussion.
I'd like to see your source on women statistically doing better in grade school. But yes they should be drafted, traditional values are the reason America is continuing to destroy itself.
Why do you feel it should be male only again? Tradition. That is stupid. Women are also a force to be reckoned with in war, they are proven to be better survivors and have a higher pain threshold.
But on a serious note, I think that women should be drafted, so as long as they are placed in all female combat units, to prevent possible sexual relations or harassment.
Google Search finds many university educational research papers on this topic. Some american people groups communities are the other way around, but this is the current trend for the past few years. http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/content/wome ... d-less-men http://news.uga.edu/releases/article/wh ... ol-010212/ http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/ ... rades.aspx
Yes, but assuming the majority of men in combat roles are not or have not become homosexual, then this would prevent a lot of problems.
There is plenty of documentation about sexual harassment of both genders in the military. We even have movies about it. (GI Jane) I believe that topic is well documented and also being analyzed, since the recent overseas operations have had congressional hearings. Btw, here is the link to the WSJ report that my original post is referencing, if anyone would like to read it. http://www.wsj.com/articles/lawmakers-i ... 1454627151
Speaking of all female combat units, "Kelly's War" is a recently published book about the first all-female combat unit.
Its a bad call. Women shouldn't be in combat units (because they are less effective, not because of any morality reasons), and they shouldn't be drafted either.
1st source: its Mistitled, it just says graduation rates and attendance is higher despite the title being that girls are smarter than boys 2Nd and 3Rd source both say boys do better on tests yet still recieve lower grades, bias much?
