Minnows, Dolphins, & Whales

  1. So, today we are going to learn about 3 different species of marine life: Minnows, dolphins, and whales.

Let’s start with the smallest of the group: Minnows.

Minnows are a general term that encompasses both salt and freshwater small fish who are usually used as fishing bait. A minnow is also known as a pinkeen in Ireland. The most common usage of the term ‘minnow’ is in reference to the fish from the cyprinidae family. The size of a minnow can differ from the species, but are usually between 5-13 cm long.

Now, lets get a little bit bigger.

Dolphins are very cute creatures, but don’t get fooled by their appearance, they are cold-hearted in the inside. In fact, the dolphin is the only other mammal on earth other than humans that 'mates' with one another strictly for pleasure, which is pretty creepy. You guys do that stuff just for pleasure? Eww. A dolphin can differ in size starting from 5.6 ft, up to 31 ft depending on the species. Did you know a killer whale is not actually a whale, but a dolphin? That explains their actions during the movie ‘Happy Feet’. Most dolphins feed on squid and fish, but some will eat some of our beloved seals. They are the ones that are taking our seals away from us for their own purposes. Us narwhals despise these wicked creatures.

Alas, we have the most wonderful of all of the creatures: Whales

Whales are simply amazing creatures. They can differ in size from 8.5 feet, to a gigantic 112 feet. The largest mammal on earth is in fact the blue whale, which explains our laziness. A blue whale is so large, that a small child could crawl through its heart. Some species of whales are well adapted for diving to great depths. They have a layer of fat, or blubber, under the skin to keep warm in the cold water. WE ARE NOT FAT. IT IS SIMPLY BLUBBER. Jeez, will you people ever learn? Now, let’s get to a more interesting species of whale: the narwhal. The narwhal is a majestic creature that can grow from 13 to 18 ft, excluding our beautiful tusks. We usually dive down down to a deep 5,000 ft, which usually lasts around 25 minutes. Sadly, we only have a life span of around 50 years. Also, because of climate change, our #1 cause of death now is because we suffocate under the ice when it moves and cuts us off. There are only about 75,000 of us left, and we have been hunted by the inuit people for thousands of years. So please, #SaveTheNarwhals.

Wow, nice post, subject seems familiar... I wonder if we can lower that umber to 50k? 75k seems a little high for a reward tier.

  9. Re: Minnows, Dolphins,

I think a Narwhal is just a dolphin whose mom was in weed during the pregnancy.

  10. Re: Minnows, Dolphins,

Why would a small child crawl through a blue whale's heart? Sounds dangerous to me. Where are the parents?

  15. Re: Minnows, Dolphins,

Saw a show on History Channel about the lost Vikings of North America. Said that when Vikings came to Greenland they were pretty much 1st Europeans to see Narwhales. Some Vikings would ship Narwhale horns (tusks ..whatever) back to Scandinavia/Iceland and sell them as unicorn horns.

...apparently one horn/tusk would bring enough money to keep that Viking insanely rich for the rest of his life.
