Hey there, just want to collect some opinions on this recent topic. As some of you may know, in the past few years/decades Mexico has had some particular problems with the drug trade between America and other countries trying to smuggle drugs into America. This has lead not only to massive gangs being established by the wealth that has been generated, but a recent large gang war in the country has left it a little bit in the dumps. This leads to something else, however. A recent Supreme Court decision in Mexico found that the ban on marijuana is unconstitutional in one case (marijuana will remain banned in the country for the time being). This opens the door for marijuana legalization. Also, the former Mexican President from 2000-2006 made a bold statement recently, saying "Within a decade, all drugs may be legal". Can you imagine how much different the story of the drug trade would be in Mexico if drugs were made legal? It would throw the cartels out of business (except for external smuggling - but security would probably increase).
The cartlels out of business. Op r u stupid. It would mean cartels could now legally produce the drugs. You would start to see literal drug factories. Gang wars would increase drastically over selling product to America. Would never happen
Not sure if we're talking legalization (drug factories), or simply decriminalization (sending people to rehab instead of jail) Either way, The drug factories, which are going to produce drugs whether or not they are legal, would produce legal, regulated goods, meaning more tax revenue. This tax revenue (and regulation of the market) could be put towards policing the drug trade. Obviously keeping everything illegal and trying to police their way out of the drug problem hasn't worked. The drug cartels have gained even more power than 10 years ago when the war on drugs was in full effect. ___________________________________ Portugal (I think - or Spain?) was in the same boat as Mexico about 10-20 years ago. Drugs were a terrible problem there. Now they're not. Why? Because drugs were decriminalized. If someone was caught with drugs, then people wouldn't face punishment. They'd just be sent to get rehabilitation. The problem was solved - without sending loads of people to jail
I actually wouldn't mind this policy in my country. It's better they go somewhere they can atleast try to get off the stuff than to a prison system when most are filled wit drugs unless its a maximum security. In most prison's you'd end up with more contacts who distribute than you went in with & without much to do inside you may end up more addicted from boredom and the thought of facing life as a convict on the outside, which won't go down great at most job interviews...i have assault on my record & trust me thats hard enough to explain lol
