If Oxygen disappeared for 5 seconds

  1. Ever wonder What would happen if the world lost Oxygen for just 5 seconds?

1.)Everybody would get sunburnt (molecular oxygen in the air protects our skin against UV light.)

2.)daytime sky would get dark (few particles to bounce light means a dark, almost black sky.)

3.)all pieces of un-treated metal would instantly spot weld to each other.

4.) earth's crust would crumble (Oxygen makes up 45% of earth's crust)

5.)everybody's inner ear would explode( we would lose around 21% of air pressure)

6.)Water is 1/3 Oxygen, without it Hydrogen would turn into a gaseous state and expand in volume.

NOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE AMOUNT OF OXYGEN DOUBLED?!

1.) Paper Airplanes would fly farther!

2.) we would get better gas mileage!

3.)we would be happier and more alert.

    BUT...

    There would be GIANT insects!

  2. Haha cool :)

  3. You should be clear whether you're referring to oxygen atoms or oxygen molecules. I bet if you did carbon you would get even a worse horror story.

  4. oxygen Molecules, sorry about the confusion to anyone.

  5. Well then most of this stuff is false

  6. "molecular oxygen protects from uv waves" ozon i suppose? not oxygen.

your ears wont explode since the pressure in your ear also decreases with 21%. moreover, have you ever jumped in the water? 2 metres deep equals 20% air pressure.

how would metal be affected since it reacts with ogygen? if anything the metal gets better.

I am not sure about the sky becoming dark, there is still nitrogen and watervapor there. Those are bound to bounce off light too.

    for more ogygen

Mega insects, yes, over a large amount of time.

Better milage mmh i suppose you mean more complete reactions per mol? I'm no expert but i take it there is already enough oxygen for the reactions to be completely, cars do not exhale carbonmono-oxide.

    Happier.
There is a limit of how many oxygen a blood cell can carry and currently the blood cells would fill for 100%. But i am quite sure about this one, biology is tricky.

  7. Yes the sudden drop in air pressure would be too much for your ears to take so they would explode. If they were to decrease over a certain length of time you would be fine

  8. No. The outside pressure decreases 21% but the inside pressure also decreases with 21% since the oxygen also dissapeares there. Of course when taking psi into it means that youre gonna feel the sudden change, but explode? Nope

  9. True but i guess a total collapse would happen in both cases immidiately. No need 5 secs for that. A blink of an eye would be by far enough.

  10. I ️ Oxygen

  11. And... The O2 arena would just be ..... Arena

  12. The happier is spot on.
Oxygen in aircraft for decompression? To keep you alive 
No to get you high as you die to reduce panic.
So to double available oxygen would promote a term of happiness and better health towards youth, but at the expense you would age faster ( free radicals causing internal damage ) though if only for 5 seconds its not going to do much at all other than make you feel happy and a little lethargic.

  13. I'm an engineer here, and a 21% drop in pressure may damage some eardrums but not many. Metal would've improved without oxygen to react to it.

Double O^2, well it would take over 150 years to see a dramatic size difference in bugs to be seen.
Happier, not necessarily, we can only use so much oxygen, too much extra and the lack of increase of other molecules could put us in a precarious situation. Would not recommend double... Maybe 10% increase over 20 years.

As for combustion engines, well yes the oxygen would make the reaction more reactive. But oxygen acts more like a stabilizing agent as is such in oxy acetylene welding and too much will kill it all off.

  14. Plants would not grow for 5 seconds. Big deal.

  15. Oh no, that would be CO2

  16. What if U2 never existed?

  17. plants do use O2 to grow ;)

  18. mmh di-uranium... does it even exicts today?
