Rough Decisions This is a short story written for a friend. To set the scene, Eclipse was once in love with Arch. She realized he only mattered to her as much as she let him matter. Solaria fell in love with him, and now they're in love. Sort of. --- Solaria was smitten with Arch. She sought his attention, lived for it. It disgusted Eclipse. She wasn't jealous, because Solaria was stupid and arrogant. And her lover was Nathaniel. Eclipse saw that changing. Very, very soon. And Nathaniel would be dumped, she thought. She had successfully rid herself of any affections for Arch in the past day. She had gone from loving him in very way possible to being cold and nonchalant towards him. She considered this success. Solaria was a better match for him anyways. She was, she was, she was, she was... Still, Eclipse regretted her choice not to love him. None of that now, she told herself crossly. You made a decision. You wanted this. Let Solaria be happy with the brute. Eclipse sighed, a deep sigh that poured out all of the hopelessness she was feeling. She felt lost, but she was sure she had made the right decision. She stretched, her aching limbs protesting. Perhaps spending a night in. the rain and laying on the ground wasn't a good idea, Eclipse thought as she grimaced. She began to run, run randomly through the forest. Long, tangled hair flew behind her as Eclipse ran. Oh, how she ran. And then she bumped into Solaria. "I proposed to Arch!" The incompetent wretch bubbled away, unaware of Eclipse's frustration and annoyance at the young twit. "What about Nathaniel?" Eclipse arched an eyebrow. "Oh, him. I wasn't even in love with him!" She squeaked, cheeks flushing. Eclipse rolled her eyes. "Well good luck with your marriage," Eclipse said sarcastically, muttering "*****," quietly. At that Solaria looked excited and happy. "I'm sure he's my REAL true love!!!" Her enthusiasm was not matched by Arch, as Eclipse discovered later. She bumped into him on her way home. "Hi, Arch," She said politely if not coldly. "I heard about your engagement with Solaria. Good luck." There was no trace of emotion in her cold, icy words. No affection. Pure ice. Arch looked her over... "I never accepted." "You let her believe it still. You let her hold you, you let her love you." A note of disbelief crept into Eclipse's tone. "You deceived her." "I didn't. She got carried away. I didn't know what to do. I let her believe it and do what she wanted." He shrugged. "I'll just marry her for the heck of it. She's an amazing girl." Eclipse flinched slightly at the words. Her love for him had dissipated entirely. "Well. Have fun with marriage." She spat the last word like poison. "And have fun being a... A Rose. A sappy Rose. A Rose, one of those sunshine-loving, flimsy, recks." Arch looked at her like she was insane. "Roses are amazing, beautiful, fun-loving, bright, and happy. Have fun being..." He searched for the word. "Haunted." Eclipse felt her heart shatter, but ignored it. "Have fun..." She echoed. ---
