Candy Canes- An Essential Discussion

  1. Hey fellow KaWers. I am here to talk about a topic that is at the utmost importance. It quite possibly is even more important than politics. Well, who am I kidding, it is more important than politics. Well, yesterday, there was something that was brought to my attention. I was shopping at Wal-mart. I know it was Black Friday, but there was something that I couldn't believe. Things aren't very cheap here where I live. A box of 12 candy canes were being sold for $0.98. They were full sized and very decent quality. Now, I thought about this for a while. 12 candy canes were being sold for 98 cents. 98/12 = 8.2 cents. I would just count that as 8 cents. Ok, but factor in that both the manufacturing company and wal-mart both have to make a profit from selling this, recall that companies need electricity, some human maintenance, etc. So I would take 2 cents away, one cent for profit for the company and once cent for profit for wal-mart. Alright, if I did my math correctly, which is a pretty rare occasion, we are down to about 6 cents. Then, factor in the shipping. Now c'mon, we have to make the shipping at least 1 cent per box. Ok, 5 cents now per cane. Another factor I must apply would be the box, the box was pretty decent quality and condition. It was sturdy and quite colorful, eye-catching, if I may. I would make the box probably no less than 12 cents. So that takes at least 1 cent away from each cane now. So, finally, that would make each cane roughly 3 cents to manufacture. Plus, this is very small, but the wrapper too. Well yeah, it was kind of weird when thinking 3 cents could buy you a full, nice quality, good old candy cane. Ain't that a *sweet* deal, huh?

So to sum it all up, I was amazed that a candy cane could only cost as little as 3 cents to make. So, next time, if you have change in your pocket, as little as several cents or as big as a quarter, don't think that it's useless. ;)

If you have any questions or disagreements with this, I know that I will have a ton, by all means no one is stopping you from expressing your opinions in the comments section. They don't go un-noticed. Also, if you need it, I have some tissues for the haters that can't stand people like me. Well, that's it for me. Thanks for listening! Have a great day.

Companies that manufacture don't make profit off the retail sale, they sell it wholesale and make profit that way, the retail store gets right to make profit from it that way.

  5. Ok thank you, I learned something now. So I guess that makes it 4 cents per cane. Not bad still.

  6. But those coins are only valuable when buying in millions

  7.  very true. Sam's > Wal-Mart

  8. But my point is, if you think about it in retail/micro/individual value/worth, the deal is not too bad.

  9. It is possible that the candy canes were in an ad to bring people to buy more stuff and being sold as at a loss for this reason. Just a possibility.

  10. That is a good thought that should be in consideration. However, stores don't often do that. If every box was sold, that store would lose tons. Especially since it's a good deal, it is likely a lot will be sold.

  11. Candy canes of really good in hot chocolate though  it's off topic but I had to get it off of my chest.

  12. I agree 

  14. They don't always make profits, what also make good sense is shifting stuff that will go out of date, or go out of demand. Selling something for a loss before it goes out of date, is better than nothing and letting it go out of date.

  15. The expiration date was 2 years from now, they probably shouldn't have been worried about it.

  16. No support
