Black Friday Arrives in the UK

Discussion in 'Off Topic' started by Reproduction, Nov 28, 2014.

  1. As many of you may be aware, the US national holiday, Black Friday has officially arrived here in the UK. Tesco, Asda (a Walmart subsidiary), Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Currys and many other large supermarkets and retailers here in the UK, have taken part in this American holiday, offering huge discounts across many products.

As with most Black Fridays, it has been mayhem here today in the UK. Crowds gathered from the early hours of the morning, queuing up to be released into the world of discounts and money-saving opportunities. With the numbers came the expected violence associated with this day. Especially around the technological areas of each supermarket were there hundreds of impatient individuals slapping, punching, pushing others - it's been all over the news, as it's a new experience for us Brits.

So what have been your most interesting Black Friday stories? Whether in the UK today, or in the past in the US or even Denmark, feel free to share your interesting experiences. :)

    Happy KaWing!

  18. Black Friday is not a national holiday in the US. The only reason it's such an event is because most Americans have the day off. What a shame that all those Brits were fooled into the hype. If Britain wants to adopt a US holiday, may I recommend Thanksgiving. It's a feel good holiday that focuses on family and friends and a big meal. There is no major commercial pressure.

  19. I totally agree. I really have no idea why our retailers thought it would be appropriate.
This is a prime example of how our traditional holidays/celebrations are become more and more fueled by commercial gain.
