An Actual Idea

Discussion in 'Ideas + Feature Requests' started by Cobra, Jun 28, 2015.

  1. So I've been posting crappy threads lately and a lot of them but this one is meant to be serious. My idea is that we have a newsfeed button like in the game, but on forums. Things that would pop up would be like when someone replies to your thread, when someone quotes you, when someone mentions you in a thread like @Cobra, etc. Now that's my idea and this isn't meant to be a long thread because I got to the point, so bye.

  2. I know I've already posted this gif today but oh well..

  3.
  4. Wow that gif didn't work' some one teach me how to do pics and stuff pls!

  5. And your gif sucks and doesn't work

  6. This is completely an utterly wrong. LovelyDenial is so utterly wrong about this, it isn't funny.

The KaW forums use a forum script called phpBB. phpBB is an open source project. That means that anyone can read, and if approved to the core team, edit/contribute to the code.

The script is a combination of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and SQL. These are not niche languages, not even close. These are some of the first languages you learn when going into a focus of web development.

Anyone can edit their own version of phpBB. They can add in any feature they please once they have downloaded the script from phpBB. I personally have written MODS (modifications to phpBB). It isn't hard. It doesn't require much learning, maybe 30 minutes. Anyone with knowledge of the programming languages I listed can easily modify phpBB.

The feature request that OP asked about would be relatively easy to do. If I had access to the forums files (yes the devs do, it'd be impossible not to), I could do it. It wouldn't take more than an hour to do. The devs would need to do something on their side to allow my implementation to work, some programming interpret a response and add it into your news feed.

LovelyDenial has little to no experience in anything related to computer science if she wrote something like this. I have nearly 10 years of experience in this field.

The people that reply to support emails most likely don't have experience in computer science or knowledge of how the forum works. I wouldn't believe them if they did.

  7. ^ thankyou, I was about to say.. A lot less elegantly but oh my god ..

May I add, such a small minutia of users frequently post on forums outside reading news threads. ATA is not Facebook. It's about judging whether resources should be spent on a useless feature for a minute population or something most users can utilise. Just use the search feature lol

  8. Seriously though, a feature request like this would be remarkably simple to do.

Devs, if you actually read forums, I will do this work for you. I charge $50/hour (that's very reasonable). I see it taking maybe 2 hours and I will keep a detailed hour log. If you would like to see proof of experience me, pm me or something and I will provide a better form of communication.

I will need root access in your directory where the forums are. I will need access to the SQL database that the forums use. If MODloader for phpBB.

Additionally, the quote is based off if you have AutoMOD installed. If it is not installed, the work will probably take another hour.

  9. I understand all that works for the pc version of forums, but does all that work the same for how we use forums through our hand held devices?

  10. The appearance of phpBB is dependent the current style set. There are two styles that come preinstalled with phpBB, ProSilver and Subsilver 2. Nearly all custom, non-default styles are based off of these 2 styles.

The devs probably wrote their own style that is based off of Prosilver that will display different HTML content if a mobile device is detected, otherwise it will show the PC version of forums.

I'm not sure whether this is very clear. Let me know if you want a more detailed explanation.

  11. If anyone else has questions about how forums actually work, let me know.

  12. Put the gifs link inside these bbcodes
    [imgfit.][/imgfit]
Then remove the period from the first bracket and the code will work.

  13. For All- I ALREADY Made The Same Thread a few days ago..
Check 'Forum Notifications' or something like that...

HAS ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED BY DEVS ON MY THREAD..

  14. thx

  15. To add to jacksons point,

Your posts are linked to your account, enough said.

For those who don't understand, this means if a post is linked to your account, things like quoting can be a notification, and your threads can be a notification.

  16. But didn't kaw admin write on those threads himself and mostly agreed with her?

  17. I've always wondered how you do that, thanks
