activity tracker band question (not kaw related)

  1. I was thinking of getting an activity tracker.

Either the Fitbit charge hr or garmin vivofit with heart monitor (I was thinking vibofit2 but the updates didn't seem significant and I can get the vivofit for $70 cheaper).

I think the main differences were:

    Fitbit
    - water resistant
    - built in battery that needs 2 b charged every 5 days
    - better user friendly app
    - heart rate monitor via wrist (ppl say not very accurate)
    - display tells u abt inc calls and txt

    Vivofit
    - waterproof
    - uses 2 watch battery that lasts for a year
    - app doesn't sync automatically
    - need to use a strap on to chest (seems cumbersome but more accurate)

Was hoping to see in anyone owned either and had opinions on them or if they had another one they reccommend.

  2. Re: activity tracker question

Just ask ur local funeral director for his honest opinion. If he doesn't measure u up, then don't waste money on either. Most phones nowadays have free apps that do all u need. If not then just join a gym, they've got everything.

  3. I do go to a gym

I'm training to use science with my training and monitor my cardiac zones

I've found that most heart rate monitors in gym are terrible - they are only found on treadmills. I think it's cuz they use my hands to monitor my heart rate which is probably worse than using my wrists.

  4. Fitbit is the most reliable on the market at the current time.

There are some pretty good consumer reports/testing out on the web that suggests fitbit over most other wearable bands.

Im reluctant to buy one. A friend of mine uses hers at the water park and for running, and has held up great.

She got it free from an active heath wellness plan, so you might check with your healthcare provider if they offer something similar for free.

  5. I'm reluctant about wearing an activity band that is not waterproof because after a workout Im drenched which is why I'm leaning toward garmin vivofit but I do hear great things about the Fitbit.

  6. My dad owns a fit bit and it works well for him. It's ease of use is pretty amazing as well.

  7. That's what I hear about Fitbit

I am kinda disappointed that they don't make their products waterproof

Also I hate integrated batteries - once the battery is used up, you can't replace the battery so the band is useless. However most products only have integrated batteries

  8. Have a fitbit Charge HR. Love it. Would recommend it to anyone interested in monitoring activity. It's excellent for heart rate monitoring, walking, running. Not that great for weight training type activity. Battery lasts a week, which is not an issue if you charge it Sundays in prep for the week. Love the resting heart rate monitor feature...my resting HR dropped from 78 bpm to 65 bpm with some healthy doses of daily exercise.

Pair the device with the app and a calorie tracker app and you have a very powerful set of tools to motivate you!

  9. I heard it's great at measuring restin heart rate but not great when ur exercising - true?

  10. Have not heard that. Seems to monitor heart rate types no different that most activity trackers. They're not perfect, but in general seems to work good. You can set your own heart rate zones within the app so it can track your custom minutes per day in resting, normal, fat burn, cardio and peak heart rate zones. It will even cross reference your HR and calculate an activity level to determined burned calories over time...

  11. I'm using a Polar Flow with HRM B700.

But after going through many Fitness Bands, the Jawbone 24 is pretty good.

It even tells you how good your sleep quality was.

  12. If you're looking for Waterproof.

My only option for you is Polar M400 with HRM B700.

It's waterproof with the Heart Rate Monitor working underwater as well, provided the entire thing and you are in a 2mm neoprene suit.

    Polar is true professional gear.
    Used by professional athletes.

The Polar M400 connects to your iPhone or Android via Bluetooth.

The Polar App also connects to the Calorie counter app MyFitnessPro to keep track of exercise and food etc.

    Polar has two apps.
    Polar Flow (connects to everything)
And Polar Beat (connects to HeartRate Monitor)

Polar also has Stride Sensors if you're an avid runner.

Most Polar Heart Rate Monitors can connect to Gym Equipment as well.

Good luck in finding a great tool for exercise.

  13. I'm a member at rei - I could buy both and return the one I dun like after a couple weeks

  14. Like that guy said, ask a funeral director. They're very helpful.

  15. Fitbit works great but i think there are better options.

  16. Gold Apple Watch.

  17. I dun understand - why ask a funeral director

  18. Thought it would b weird wearin 2 activity bands - so I'm trying out the vivofit. If I dun like it - I'll return it for a Fitbit.

Things I like so far Abt the vivofit:
    - I get reminders to get up and walk if I've been sittin too long
    - the heart monitor better than the ones at gym. The gym one was adding over 25 more beats to my heart rate - I knew it was off but I didn't know it was off by this much.

    Thing I dun like
    - can't see the screen at night (vivofit2 solved this problem but for $70 less not an inconvenience that is really bothering me).
    - I can't reset the counters ESP the mileage counter; however they reset on their own daily
    - no stop watch

Ummm. I was looking at the polar but the ones I were interested in were really pricey. I think that the vivofit is something I can use aS a newbie and if I get really into this then is invest in a polar.
