I always remember Stephen Hawkin saying that it would be close to a mathematical impossibility for aliens not to exist, simply because of the size of the universe meaning that there are near infinite chances for life to occur. But then again, I know nothing of physics except that hot air rises.
You're right, but most places within space are out of reach so it is irrelevant unless there is life somewhere where we can go.
