Interesting thread.Lookimg forward to the influences and evolution into Heavy Metal,Punk and the others etc...
Great thread as always Ashes. Though I have to admit you waited till page 4 to post the awesome and mind blowing band Pink Floyd. Was the first band I have a very significant memory of when a fellow student in elementary school blared out Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1 while walking to the buses after school, "We don't need no education" blaring from it. Was yanked by the principal. Bless Nick Mason and Rick Wright who are no longer with us. I have seen no mention of Rolling Stones Magazine most influential member to Rock
and Roll. Bob Marley. He was the most influential of all musicians to date. His words and style of music on top of his message to all. One Love. He was a genius at music rhythm creativity and delivery. He is my one go to musician for any mood. God bless his soul as he lives on in his music, and many talented musician children, one being his eldest Ziggy Marley, who I have enjoyed seeing in concert many times.
CHAPTER 5: HAIR METAL AND HEADBANGING The 80's! For those who lived it, 80's was fun!.. There wasn't a major social movement and technology was starting to have a pioneering impact (Hello MTV, boomboxes and Walkman) on how we consume music.. And then there was Ozone depleting, Global warming inducing, CFC laden, Hairspray! Hair Metal was catchy.. It had more Juvenile Jinks than Angst.. In a way, it was closer to the original 50's Rockabilly in spirit.. Hair Metal bands came from everywhere, bringing with them their own unique stories and sounds.. From New Jersey, Bon Jovi was massive.. From L.A, you got Motley Crue, Poison, Quiet Riot, Warrant and L.A Guns Hair Metal's roots go all the way back to Vivaldi *Omg I love my bad puns! From Philly, you got Cinderella From Rockford Illinois, you got Cheap Trick From UK, you got Whitesnake Tawny Kitaen showing us how to wash the car to Whitesnake's song in the 80's And in the tradition of 80's one hit wonders, we get Europe's "Final Countdown" from Sweden.. All I gotta say is that I'm glad Queen's Freddy Mercury didn't go all Hair Metal (Musically and hair wise) during the 80's.. One other band, like Bon Jovi, reached that apex of glam rock evolved into a distinctive synthesizer infused 80's rock sound.. Def Leopard dropped two definitive mega albums in the 80's in Pyromania and Hysteria.. Lita Ford was the Queen of hair metal in the 80's.. Now.. Let's go from Hair Metal, to Head Banging Heavy Metal! 80's gave birth to a hyperfast cord picking, heart pounding, whip lashing rhythm guitars rock It definitely helped that you have lots of long hair.. 80's head banging metal was absolute joy to Rock out to whether you're at a front row of a stadium concert, or cruising in your Firebird.. Here are the absolute masters of that Genre.. METALLICA.. IRON MAIDEN.. MEGADEATH.. MOTÖRHEAD.. SLAYER.. ANTHRAX.. JUDAS PRIEST! Yea.. That list pretty much ruled.. Yes.. Yes.. The beast is definitely in that dude.. Pop Rock was difficult to define in the 80's.. Mega bands such as The Police, Genesis, The Pretenders, The Cars, and INXS had deeper roots in blues, folk Rock than say.. MADONNA Here are also two iconic images from the 80's world of Pop Rock We all know Patrick Nagel's art on the cover of this iconic Duran Duran album We got to move these color TV's! Here's a few other iconic events in Rock in the 80's.. In 1985, Bob Geldorf and a few of his friends in both side of the pond, decided to stage simultaneous concerts in relief of Famines in Africa.. LIVE-AID was a shining example of Rock musicians lending their music and camaraderie in support of humanitarian causes.. Collaborations also resulted in massive singles "Do they know it's Christmas?" And "We are the world" All star power.. *I actually remember singing We are the World at school to raise money.. I pretended like I was the Boss.. Hehe Joan Jett.. 80's Rock Diva.. If there is one song that you have to pick, that defines the 80's, chances are it's "BEAT IT", by Michael Jackson.. The Red Jacket, the gangs, the moves... Oh and that absolute maniacal, maximum overdrive, monster riff and solos from one of the best guitarists of all time.. Eddie Van Halen.. Beat it, in a way, was as successful a Pop Rock song can get, without the hard core Rockers shaking their heads.. Thank you Quincy Jones.. In 1981, Bruce Springsteen wrote a heartfelt song about the Vietnam Vets.. The kind where your very home country felt ashamed about you and kicked you down.. He couldn't find the 'sound' for it till almost a year, when the music collaboration of the whole E Street Band came together and what came out of the jam session was another iconic Rock songs from the cloth of "Fortunate Son".. Yes.. We all know what he's doing.. OK.. Time to bring out the 4 greatest Rock bands that came out of the 80's.. One is from the Emerald Isle.. Two are from L.A.. And one hails from Down Under.. #4... U2 70's Ireland was a mess.. The violent clashes of the IRA and the British Govt were reverberating down in Dublin. But listen up 14 year old kids.. Back in 1976, a 14 year old kid named Larry Mullen Jr., Posted on his school notice board to apply for a new band!.. All the members of U2 came together by responding to that notice.. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton.. All brought their post punk rock angst, Gaelic poetry and prose, the tensions of the republic.. And gave U2, a deep resonating, strings plucking, politically challenging, mysticism infused Rock sound that made them a mega band in the 80's.. The Joshua Tree #3... VAN HALEN So.. There were two Dutch brothers whose parents immigrated to the U.S.. One played drums and the other player the guitar.. But one would sneak in and play the drum set that his brother got until that brother got fed up and said... "OK fine! You play the drums.. And I'll play the guitar".. ...oh and they also got this flamboyant young American kid, who had failed the auditions, but because the brothers were using his sound system.. ...and Van Halen was born.. Eddie was a guitar god of the 80's along with the innovators such as Steve Vai, Randy Rhodes and Brian May.. And Diamond Dave was.. Well.. He could do jumping splits... Van Halen was that rare combination of Metal, Punk, Funk and a dash of California Melodies originated by the Beach Boys.. Gimme something to write on man! #2 GUNS N ROSES Welcome to the jungle... The LA jungle that is.. GnR was founded when L.A Guns, Hollywood Rose, bottles of Jack Daniels, and raw delta blues punk sounds merged.. GnR was destructive, unapologetic, raw, and when David Geffen begged MTV to put in a slot and MTV put them in the Sunday 4am slot, the beast got out anyways.. And when their massive debut album "Appetite for Destruction" dropped like an Atom bomb in the Pop, hair metal mid 80's, the ghosts of raw Rock and Rollers from the Doors, The early Who to Janice Joplin were resurrected.. #1... AC️DC For those about to Rock... We salute you!! How the hell did this band come out of the Australian outback!? How the hell they Rock SO MUCH!!? This band.. Just ROCKED.. Period.. Dun.. Duh-Dun.. Duh-Dun.. Done Dirt Cheap!!! The 80's.. Yea It Rocked.. Lock that cellar door and baby.. Talk dirty to me..

Here are some samples from that era that I hope you could go listen and catch the vibe.. And may be put you in the mood.. For moar Sax!
