  5. Well, ever since the addition of the quoting feature it has been misused and abused. Not only with the original post. But yes, like you said everyone should know what the thread is about before posting. Unfortuneately, thats not how it works sometimes. Sometimes threads get derailed, and go off topic. Quoting the OP can be useful for reference in a circumstance like this or even after the first few pages. Also, quoting the original post is important if you are responding directly to the post. Quoting helps a lot with this, because you can quote individual sections and highlight those... For example...

  15. By the way, the "@soandso'sname" trend was the predecessor to quoting. It is still useful, but quoting can be much more empowering when it comes to posting.

    If you quote has good placement, fine. If you quote a 1000 word post and then just say "eh?", I'm gonna smack you a bit if you fit into my smacking range.
