OP is actually correct in his statement that President Obama sent a thank you letter to the mosque that Alton Nolen, the man accused of beheading a former female colleague in Oklahoma, attended. The letter was delivered by a White House courier and was a recognition of the work the members of the mosque had done in helping to rebuild Moore, Oklahoma after a severe tornado in 2013. The primary issue most people who are upset are expressing is that no White House representative attended the funeral of the beheading victim and that the DOJ immediately labeled the incident as act of workplace violence, refusing to investigate the act as a possible act of terrorism. Those upset point to the fact that witnesses claim that Nolen was chanting Islamic phrases during the beheading and has a facebook page with extensive radical Islamist and pro Sharia law writings. My take is that the letter represents an unfortunate case of bad timing rather than an act of overt callousness on the part of the White House. I see nothing wrong with thanking a community faith group for their efforts in rebuilding a tornado ravaged city. And it's hardly logically valid to conclude that simply because that mosque had a member who committed an act of horrible violence that, therefore, the entire mosque is guilty by association. It would appear that Nolen, if this was indeed an act of terrorism, was likely radicalized on the Internet rather than within the mosque itself. However, I would also agree that the presumptive declaration that this beheading was an act of workplace violence (the declaration was made the same day as the crime by the DOJ), smacks as lacking in due diligence. I would think such a crime, coming on the heals of the series of beheadings in Syria that have been recently posted online, would call for a more lengthy investigation before making any determination as to the nature of the crime or the intent of the perpetrator. TL; DR version Obama did send a letter, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's insensitive to the tragedy. However, the DOJ misstepped by declaring the beheading an act of workplace violence before an investigation had even been completed.
