I honestly have no idea what you're talking about since I never played gaw

 

I haven't played gaw for a while, but I believe the "crew" feature was a group of up to 6 players. They could talk like in clan chat(but in the place of ally chat), set their own crew announcement messages, and see if one of their fellow crew members are receiving inc.

I'm guessing it was useful for osw and strip prevention.

 

If what Jac says is true, I could see a benefit here. Small osw teams, watching each other for strips. EE teams working together to bring down their targets. But there is no room on the chat bar for this option, so it won't happen.
