How to Reduce Bullying While Retaining PvP Fun

Discussion in 'Ideas + Feature Requests' started by Celeborn_2, Feb 1, 2014.

  1. As of late, there have been lots of threads concerning in-game bullying. I have witnessed this kind of behavior and I think it reduces many people's fun in this game; I'm even sure that many players left because of it, reducing the devs' income.

This is by no means a post about banning PvP -- on the contrary, the point of this thread is to make it more enjoyable for everyone.

    Definition of In-Game Bullying
By bullying, I mean stuff like constantly hitting someone much less than half your own CS, someone who hasn't hit first. I also mean clans that will mass-farm people who just hit back at someone of theirs who hit first, i.e. not respecting 1vs1 that the other person hasn't even started. Volleying someone's well-sought-out allies up to a point where they can't afford to hire them back any more, against their explicit will, is a kind of bullying behavior, too.

Counter Measures That Could Be Implemented
I've thought quite a while about effective counter measures that the victims of the described tactics could use. Please note that all suggestions would require at least some development effort, so it would be great if you supported them.

    1. Narrow the Hit Range
This is a no-brainer, and it has been suggested many times before: PvP should be at least half-way fair, which means the current hit range is way too wide because it allows some players to hit others who have absolutely no chance to hit back successfully. The range should only be down to half your own CS and up to double; all other attempts should result in "You are too strong/weak for this opponent." BFA and especially BFE is a factor nowadays, so yes, it should be a factor in calculating the hit range as well. It is discussable whether the range should be wider in EE wars; I'm not necessarily against this exception because EE wars are an event with a limited time and its own set of rules.

    2. Guerilla Spells
In real wars, weaker armies/groups of fighters can sometimes succeed using some kind of guerilla tactics. In KaW as it is now, there's just raw powers who clash against each other, crushing the weaker army without any chance for them. You may argue that KaW is a Renaissance fantasy game and that back then, most wars happened with two armies facing each other directly on the battle field. But even then, good strategists knew about ambushes, traps, and other tactical ways to defeat, or have a chance of defeating, superior armies.

Here's where some guerilla spells would come in handy, such as

    * Berserk Mode (6 mithril, 2 hours): up to half of your troops or spies will be used to hit your opponent, making you stronger with every hit and allowing you to go dtw faster. This spell should be disabled in EE wars; it would be way too easy to self-KO on the strongest member of the opposing clan ;).
    * Bolt of Vision (6 mithril, 1 hour): a 50% chance that your opponent's name will be revealed even on successful spy actions
    * Veil of Discretion (2 mithril, 1 hour): the fact that you are using spells at all will be hidden from your public profile. This means you can be stronger than you appear, and it will make the Bolt of Vision even more effective.

    3. Stop Excessive, Involuntary Volleys
There should be a switch somewhere in a player's profile that allows them to turn volleys off and on. When turned off, an ally they have held for more than 24 hours and that has been hired away cannot be hired away again for 24 hours once they hired it back. If you want to volley someone to help them grow, just activate the "Enable Volleys" switch. Like with the hit range, it's debatable whether the feature should be turned off in EE wars.

    4. Allow People to Take A Break
Everyone needs to sleep and/or deal with some real-world stuff from time to time. Bullies will figure out your activity schedule and preferably "deal with you" when you're not on. So how about creating an "Otherworldly Call" spell that will more or less remove you from the game for 6 hours, cast-able once every 24 hours? Your troops and spies would not regenerate, you couldn't be attacked or spied on, and allies that you have held for more than 24 hours couldn't be bought away. The spell would be irreversible, and on mobile devices you should get a notification 15 minutes before you go back into action. Should be disabled in all kinds of clan wars (including OSW which could be a clan option without setting a specific adversary).

And now discuss! Please note that "but I enjoy the n00b tears on my wall" is not a valuable contribution to this thread, and I'll ask you to leave if you write anything like that.

  2. I like the 1st and 2nd ideas hate the last one though all in all good thread

  3. So I can't post

  4. That's not the point. If you don't like the ideas just put some effort in explaining why not or suggest some alternatives.

  5. Reserved

  6. About no. 4, how will devs know or system know that the clan, for example Clan X is in an OSW with Clan Y?

  7. There's no need to know that. I wrote: "including OSW which could be a clan option without setting a specific adversary." That means owner or admin sets general OSW mode for the clan, and its members can't cast the Otherworldly Call spell.

  8. Then it shouldn't be called an osw..:D it's a system war if u do that,n besides people will demanding more,n when they get what they want, they'll start complaint.. y bother..:I

  9. Why is appreciation of noob tears not a valid comment to make in reference to this thread? I dont mind if the hit range is made even more narrrow (not that there is such a range irl, but sure you can have one here i guess) but other than that i am genuinely curious how and why any of your other suggestions should be taken seriously?

What on earth makes you believe that your suggestions have even 1% more value than a random "i love noob tears on my wall" comment.

I say this while keeping in mind that devs are atleast still pretending that pvp is a big part of this game. No support at all really, for any of your ideas. Especially not the silly "no volley mah allies" and the even sillier "no strip spell".

  10. I dont like 3 but the rest sounds okay...

  11. Not much time to post so will make this brief.
1 yes in principle but it would have a negative affect on osw.
The why is simple. Pot burning an enemy no matter the size can take thousands of actions.
Limiting the size of members that can effectively fight in an osw will damage many clans.

2 will give more thought before I reply.

3 I have never liked allies for destroying the build v build element. However they add an element of risk especially to osw.
It requires team work and co-ordination to pull off a strip
Limiting volleys because players want to hold their own alts is pointless. It reduces the the risk to larger kingdoms. Yes the ally market is lopsided but that's an in built feature of the game.
By capping players ability to price would destroy the value of the ally market and again do more harm than good.

4 far too open to exploit. I'm in osw. Time for bed. Most of my crew is USA based lets call off osw and cast for 12 hours. Then turn it on and attack enemy again. Assuming they haven't activated their shields.

Nice ideas but can't I can't see how they could be implemented without destroying the current basics of kaw

  12. I don't believe their is bullying in kaw as much as their are just cowards who are incapable of fighting players their own size.

Remember. Big players earn much less from small players when they hit.

    Bank your gold in bronze.

Keep only max plunder with the worst stat ally you can find.

If they ever stop hitting you, hit them to remind them to keep wasting their regens and time on you. You are owning a persons game when their entire kaw play time is spent badgering you.

Stalk them. If they ee or system war. The moment their war starts, hire some of their allies to stifle them.

Eventually you will have enough in bronze for a huge upgrade. When that time comes, you will exact your revenge.

There are no bullies in kaw. There are no victims in kaw You can ruin even the most persistent of cowards with enough time and strategy.

Every player that is twice or more my size has conveniently stopped hitting the very moment i grow big enough to defend myself and take the fight to them.

"You're not worth my time "
"You're a noob, I have better things to do"
"I don't care if you hit me,
    Etc etc.
These are the typical excuses of cowards when their day comes.

This is a war game. Draw your own battle
    Lines. Make war.

  13. Well said Norma. Adding these features will just take away more from the game, especially since ebs have practically destroyed the pvp part of this game.

  14. Support for closer hit range

  15. The Dot says

    This a really good thread

    A. Remember its a game - a war game - vac put the phone down and walk away - or just reset

    B. bullying - picking on weaker, smaller, stupider, uglier people is wrong I fully support

But keep in mind - in some cases bullying needs to take place . I mean I am bullied in school all the time because I am obnoxious and annoying and have no people skills. If I was not bullied on a daily basis. Image how overbearingly painful I would be

  16. Norma took the words right out of my mouth.

  17. Celeborn did you really feel the need to make a thread because your lady Ancienne got dramatic in forums again? Just take away her phones/computer and you won't have to worry about this.

It's a war game, War!!!! Don't like what comes with it, stop playing. But jeez you sound like a democratic convention sitting around talking about how we can make the world even softer.

  18. Ata needs to concentrate on getting decent pvp items/achievements (not EE) and stop worrying about bullying.

Those who apparently get 'bullied' according to the forum noobs, amazingly are the ones who rant, rage, make threads, threaten or start the trouble in my experience.

I know of no players who have done absolutely nothing and get hit continuously by another player.

You don't like the hassle - ask the person to stop nicely and if they give cf terms then either accept them n move on or don't, shut up and bend over again.

    Cheers
    Snr 
