Well personally I feel that high attack power is the way to go and later on if you need defence you could always build a tower. They are quite cheap but very effective. I builded one but after my defence came up I had difficulties to find equally strong targets. Every target in the list where to strong for me so I sold the tower and went for attack again. I don't have farming problems and if that should happen I have something better than towers. I have my cheese loving friend insane. 

Well the stats go from 900 to 5400 in ally bonus so it's a pretty big step there too...
