    Chapter One - Draco's duty

    Draco's POV

Damn The Dark Lord! Why did he have to choose me to kill the old man, he's practically killing himself with his age, he doesn't need me to help.

Well, father's rant about how I should be honored to serve The Dark Lord didn't help, the long wait to get into Azkaban to talk to him didn't help either. Luckily the dementors have gone dark, otherwise I would probably be sharing a cell with father.

Yes, there was a time when I thought father's rants actually mattered, but it didn't seem like it anymore. But then again, Dumbledore isn't much better, I won't miss him.

The mark being cursed onto my arm was painful too, and why The Dark Lord had to laugh that freaky cold laugh the whole time it was happening didn't cheer me up.

I suppose someone had to kill the old man anyway, he had survived so long, I've doubted he could die of old age, and The Dark Lord probably did too.

Mother has been disappearing a lot, I think she's been gone to visit Snape, what she wants from him I could never guess, and to run into Potter in Nocturne Alley proved that god hated me.

Yes, I know he was there, he's a terrible spy. I guess ignoring Potter will have to do for this whole year, not the whole year, just until I figure out how to sneak the Death Eaters into the castle and kill Dumbledore.

Again, I have to say, there's absolutely no reason I'm needed at all, any Death Eater could kill Dumbledore, but I suppose it's sneaking the Death Eaters in that really matters.

I feel a nudge from my left, Pansy was flirting with me like usual. Oh how I despised her, her annoying little voice and her so called "feelings" for me.

And to think I used to have feelings for her, it's a good thing I left my feelings behind when I left that forest with the Dark Mark on my arm.

"You don't look so well Drakey," Pansy whispered in my ear. "Perhaps one of my magic kisses should cheer you up."

Ok, now I'm sick of this, this compartment on this train. I decided to go on a leisurely stroll. And banging into Blaise just as I left the compartment killed my luck.

"Potter is one of Slughorn's favorites," he said to me, with disgust on his face.

Ok, this is even better, our new teacher, is a Potter fan. This is just distressing. I thanked Blaise with a nod and continued down the train. With absolutely nothing to do, a walk shouldn't hurt.

    Actually it did.

I completely forgot what walks are for. Unless you are admiring the scenery, which isn't very common when you are on a train which you have taken ten tines before, walks were great for giving you time to think, and with all this duty talk in my mind, what was I to think about but what I had to do?

With my head down, I turned and walked back to the compartment, only to be purred at by Pansy. Yes, purred at.

And now what? The lights are gone, I can't see anything. That is, until I grab what I got from Nocturne Alley, this let's me see whatever I want at whatever darkness. Oh look, it's Potter, sneaking into our compartment. Like I said, he's a bad spy.

With a little bit of talk, the lights went back on and the train arrived. Thank god too, the first thing I'm going to do after the boring hat and the feast is to go to Snape, he's probably the only one who can help me. While the others left the carriage, I stayed behind to give Potter a goodbye message.

I smirked as I walked away from the compartment, I hope his friends don't go overreacting and pin the blame on me, like they do everytime.

Too bad, if I can abandon Potter behind on a train, how hard can killing an old man be?

It's not like I'm going to miss anyone here? And nobody who gets upset about what I'm going to do is actually someone I care about.

    Right?

  2. Hermione's POV

My holidays weren't very fun, I was more busy counting the days to get back to school, seeing my friends again would be cool, and I could get back to studying for my NEWTS.

What am I talking about? My NEWTS are next year! This year should be about having fun, about hanging around with my friends. I had heard what Parvati and Lavender were talking about at the end of last term, mostly just sex.

Yes, our NEWTS were coming up the year after and all they could think about was sex. Of course, it wasn't even a first for them, they talk a lot in the dormitories and like to brag a lot, mostly about who they've shagged and who they haven't.

Really, can't anyone think of anything better to do? I never really understood why boys were so interested in sex, but I guess boys are just different, but Parvati and Lavender! They'll probably be prostitutes when school ends!

Oh damn! Why am I thinking of this? The only reason I even know what a prostitute is, is because I overheard Parvati and Lavender talking about it.

What can be so fun about sex anyway? There's nothing much interesting about boys, or at least just the boys I knew. Harry was all about saving the day and Quidditch, he doesn't care about his studies. Ron's even worse, though he is a bit cute sometimes.

Ugh! What am I thinking?! Come on, think of something else!

    NEWTS NEWTS NEWTS!

    NEWTS NEWTS NEWTS!

"Um, Hermione? I think you might have gone study mad," came Ron's voice breaking into my thoughts.

I turned and simply stared at him.

"Well, you were saying NEWTS continuously, under your breath," Ron said sheepishly.

I suddenly realized I had been talking aloud.

"What else did I say?" I asked Ron.

    "Nothing, just NEWTS."

Thank god. It would be embarrassing if I had spoken aloud and he had heard what I thought about him being cute. Now that I look at him, he doesn't look that cute at all.

I can see Harry getting up. He mumbles something and leaves the compartment. This is just getting weird, after all he said about the prophecy.

Finally, the train has arrived. I can't wait to get to the feast, Harry will probably go directly.

Man, this is my second last year at Hogwarts, I'm going to muss this place and my friends. Not love miss of course. Like I said, I find nothing interesting about sex. Ron definitely isn't cute.

But I'm still going to miss this place, but again, there's nobody to love miss.

    Is there?

  4. Chapter 2: The Library

    Draco's POV

So Potter made it out of the train. Why can't I ever get rid of him? That doesn't matter, the feast was great, but that doesn't matter either.

I'm currently lying on my bed thinking about what I have to do. I've already got a plan, but first I have to find that cabinet. So now I'm stuck thinking of killing mudbloods. Filthy mudbloods. For once this subject is boring me.

I think it's time to get to sleep.

    Hermione's POV

That feast was brilliant but I can't stop thinking of Harry showing up in the middle injured. I also can't believe what Malfoy did but I should have expected it. After all, it is Malfoy.

Thinking of Malfoy is weird, he constantly insults me and I was probably born to hate him, but there is something strange about him.

Anyways, classes begin soon, I really can't wait. I'm getting tired, I'm going to sleep.

    Draco's POV

So I'm in the library studying charms. Classes haven't even started yet and I'm studying charms. I don't want to study charms, I'm just looking for a concealment charm to hide the Dark Mark.

Oh look, the mudblood Granger is here too. I should have expected it. At least now I have something to stare at when I get bored.

Actually, Granger is really a secret I've been hiding for a while. When she stepped up to the sorting hat, I started admiring how nice she looked, believe it or not. But then she got sorted into Gryffindor and I soon found out she was a mudblood.

That doesn't really matter, looking at her now, she hasn't really changed, the same enthusiastic face, charming and all. Her attitude, the way she treats homework and books. I stare at her and she stares back, how adorable. Much better than Pansy. I can't help but to smile.

Wait, am I smiling and staring at a mudblood? I should turn my head away.

Wait again, was it just me or was she staring at me too?

I slowly turn my head back. Yes, she's staring at me, and smiling too. God, she probably doesn't know he's staring at me. Is it possible she likes me too?

Wipe that thought out of your head young man, you are a Malfoy, much higher than that filthy mudblood. Time to look for concealment charms.

  5. Hermione's POV

Here I am at the library again, preparing for classes. As usual, Harry and Ron are playing wizards chess in the common room. They have absolutely no care for their studies, those two.

Malfoy is here too, that was unexpected, I wonder what he's reading. That looks like a charms book, I never knew Malfoy was the studious type, probably because he isn't.

He seems pretty intent on that book though. There he goes, looking up and looking around. That turning flicks his hair around, it's cool.

He looks pretty anxious, I wonder why. There, he stares at me, looks the other way, his expressions are changing pretty quickly. I smile softly.

Wait, what am I doing? In stating and smiling at Malfoy, the one who has been insulting me for the past five years. I hope he didn't notice. I should probably leave, but I need to keep studying.

This book isn't all that interesting. I think I'll head back up to the common room and see what Harry and Ron are doing.

While I leave, I shoot Malfoy a glance, he glances back. Our eyes meet for a moment and then I leave the library.

  6. Grr, I wrote up to the part where Malfoy says, "Wanna bet?" and then accidentally pressed the cancel button. Had to retype the whole thing pretty much.

Chapter 3 - The Civil Conversation

    Draco's POV

Finally! I've found it! The concealment charm! But reading and re-reading that charms book, I could tell it needed a lot of practice.

Here I am lying in bed awake again. I'm not a heavy sleeper, but these nights are really wearing my body out. I feel like I could use a shower.

Yep, I'm going to take a shower. Im a prefect so I'm allowed to take a shower in the middle of the night. After getting out of bed, I walk up to the fifth floor to the prefect's bathroom.

    Hermione's POV

I can't believe I didn't get any work done today! I was meant to study how to conjure green flames but I guess I was too distracted by Malfoy.

God, I can't sleep. I look over to Parvati and Lavender's beds. They're both heavy sleepers apparently. I could really use a bath right now.

In fact, I think I'll go take a bath. I slip out of bed and walk down to the fifth floor to the prefect's bathroom.

    Draco's POV

Ok, time to unchange and get in the shower. God, the hot water on my back is so relaxing. Time to get out. I grab a towel, wrap myself in it and step out of the shower to see a familiar face.

"Granger!" I shout. "What are you doing here?!"

She blushed and said, "Well, I just got out of the bath."

That's when I notice she's soaking wet and is in a towel.

"Well, time for me to go then," I say and grab my clothes.

Then I realize I'm in a room with a mudblood who's wearing only a towel and I'm wearing only a towel too and I have to get changed. To make things worse, I fancy this mudblood, well, sort of.

I can see she is also trying to find a way out of this. She's the good thinker, so I'm just gonna sit down on a bench.

    Hermione's POV

Wow, I'm in a room with Draco Malfoy and we're both wearing only a towel. and we both need to change.

I was thinking of ways to get out of this when I see Malfoy sit down.

"What are you doing?" I ask.

"You're the smart one, so I'm gonna let you do all the work while I relax," he replies.

That's one thing bad about Malfoy, he never does any work. I sit down on a bench opposite him.

"What are you doing?" he asks me.

"I think better while I'm sitting down."

Malfoy stares at me, "Well, hurry up, we can't stay here forever. Your mates Potter and Weasley will be suspicious."

"And why do you care?" I ask.

    "I don't."

"Of course you don't," I reply sarcastically.

This must have made him mad, because now he's holding onto the edges of my towel. "Listen mudblood," he says, "Shut up and think or I'll take this towel off as take a nice long look at you."

I don't doubt he will. I nod and he let's go of my towel.

"Well, what do we do?" I ask.

Malfoy smirks, "You're the smart one, Hermione, why don't you tell me?"

"Well you..." I start to retort when I realize something, "Did you just call me Hermione?"

That got him thinking. "Yeah, that was an accident."

"An accident?!" I exclaim, "So you're admitting that you're slipping?"

He blushes. Draco Malfoy blushing? That's new.

    "I am not!" he shouts.

"Sure you're not." I say, but then he starts pulling the edges of my towel outwards. "Ok, ok, I'm sorry."

"Sorry? You don't usually apologize to me."

"Well, when you're threatening to rup off the only thing I have as clothing and look at my body with your perverted tactics, what choice do I have?"

Malfoy smirked, "You've got a point."

"Wait, you're agreeing with me? Definetely slipping."

"Yeah, like the mudblood who sucks up to teachers and spends all her time studying in the library."

"Talking about the library, you were there this morning. I didn't know you were the reading type."

    "Maybe because I'm not."

"Then why were you at the library?"

"I was looking up how to curse mudbloods like you."

"Very funny Malfoy, you couldn't curse me."

"Wanna bet?" Malfoy said with an evil grin. The next moment, he had grabbed his wand from the sink and I could feel my towel slowly moving outwards.

    "Ok Malfoy, you win."

My towel stopped moving. Malfoy was grinning.

"I don't suppose you are going to tell me what you were doing in the library then."

    "You're correct mudblood, I'm not."

"Well, if you're not the reading type, what do you like doing?"

"Nothing much, I like wizards chess but there's nobody to play against. Crabbe and Goyle are idiots. I don't want to play with Pansy, and Blaise isn't interested."

"I don't play wizards chess much."

    "Yes, you study instead."

    "You're right, I do."

"Well, that's something else we agree on."

    "Yeah, I can't believe we're having a civil conversation."

"And in a bathroom wearing only towels too."

That just reminded me where we were. Malfoy looked at me.

    "Any ideas mudblood?"

"Well, you could change in there," I said while pointing at the shower.

"Brilliant, why didn't you think of that earlier?"

    "Well, we were talking."

Malfoy chose to ignore that and grabbed his clothes, walked behind the shower curtain and changed.

When he stepped out, he was fully dressed. Then he pointed at the shower.

    "Your turn, mudblood."

I walked into the shower and took off the towel. Then I suddenly remembered.

"Don't you dare try peeking Malfoy!" I shouted.

"What makes you think I want to look at your mudblood body?"

"Well, that didn't stop you from taking off my towel earlier."

    "Ok then."

I heard footsteps getting closer. Oh no. The footsteps stopped and the shower curtain started opening slowly. Very slowly, Malfoy was teasing me.

I reached my arm out of the shower and slapped Malfoy across his face. He stopped opening the curtain.

Before he could get a second chance, I hurriedly pulled on my robes.

I then opened the curtain and looked at Malfoy scornfully. He looked back sheepishly. Somehow, this made me smile.

    "That was... Fun," I said.

"Yes it was, Hermione," Malfoy replied.

    I smiled more at him.

"Well, I have to leave now," he said before leaving the bathroom.

I walked after him, and at the door, we split up. He went downstairs, I went upstairs.

That night, I couldn't stop thinking about what had just happened. I had had a really good time during all of that and I started smiling when I recalled Malfoy trying to remover my towel and opening the shower curtain.

Then I rolled over and slept. The experience made it a lot easier to sleep.
